I never played a CRPG but starting to cave to the hype.

Is the combat extremely complicated? I watched a few gameplay videos and think I may have been following it.

Yeah you would be fine probably, if you understand the basics of D&D's system

5e is... not in a great place IMO. But BG3 still scratches that D&D itch.

They also took quite a few liberties with the ruleset.

I've never played DnD or a CRPG and BG3 is my GOTY with going on 200 hours at the moment on my 3rd run.

Some of the liberties are pretty good. Bonus action on potions makes them a lot more useful in combat. Bonus action shove as well.

Critical fails on ability checks really suck though.

DnD's interactions can get complex and you can accidentally screw yourself with misclicks in BG3 (eg you can't undo movement which is a limited resource per turn). HOWEVER that should really only matter on Tactical IMO. I've played the whole game on Tactical and it's very manageable. I have over the board experience, but I think 'Balanced' should be just fine for a newcomer.

I honestly forgot that's not a thing in real 5e if so. But yeah I agree, in general the game could use some steps that reduce its encouragement of the player to save-scum. There are times where playing this game without reloads must be soooooooo aggravating

I never played DnD or any crpg like it before and I'm loving it.

My only problem is reloading everything to do with dice until i get a positive or at least interesting outcome. >.>

Hate to double post, but a lot of this game is about dealing with shit rolls. Sometimes you get screwed and the fun is how you adapt to being put in a place of disadvantage (unless you party wipe, then yeah, reload is good).

If you like to immerse yourself into a fantasy realm and make decisions based on what you think your character might do its amazing. I've beat the game 4 times and I keep thinking of more ways to play the game.

It's fine in combat, less so when the player just wants something fun to happen but there's rolls in the way. Over the board, a savvy DM can direct situations such that the players have fun in any situation. It's more inflexible in a video game system.

When you a +9 mod and the DC is 10, by 5e rules you can't fail that roll. In BG3 since nat 1s auto fail, you have a 5% chance to fail a check you should always pass.

Bad rolls do happen, but when you are high level and proficient/expert in a skill you really shouldn't be failing simple rolls on a 5% chance.

Sure, I understand, but sometimes the RNG just does you in. For me, a great deal of fun comes from trying to mitigate the disaster or terrible situation the roll puts you in.

But yes, at least with a DM, you have more options. With a CRPG it's "you rolled a 5 and now everyone hates you" type of thing. However, sometimes merking everyone, and living to tell the tale, is it's own joy. I love how BG3 will cut off story options if you fuck up or get fucked.

To each their own, though.
