It's no secret that most shows decline in quality as they grow deep into their runs. New characters brought in late on, often to replace old actors that left or to spice up a decaying formula, rarely hit the mark. What are some exceptions?

This topic is inspired by Community, I'm rewatching some s6 clips and they really nailed it with both Frankie and Elroy.

Bill from Doctor Who, introduced in the final season of Peter Capaldis run as the Doctor which was also the last season with Steven Moffat as showrunner. Shes delightful.

Jack Langrishe from Deadwood.

I know a lot of people think the theater troupe was mostly useless, and in a lot of ways I agree, but Jack was fantastic and was sorely missed in the movie

Always thought how weird it is that such a great and important character like TWD Negan was introduced so late
But I am not really sure that last episode of season 6 in a 11 seasons show is considered "late" - it's past halfway but still

Vic Fontaine isn't introduced until like 32 episodes before the end of DS9 (and this is back when 32 episodes wasn't half a run for successful shows, y'know!) and he became a total fixture in fandom minds by the end.

This was my first thought too AND I kinda disagree with my first thought. He didn't become great in my mind until El Camino, and that's blurring the line enough for me here unless we count Breaking Bad/El Camino/Better Call Saul as the same series...which has valid reasons to count like that, but it's a little blurrier here given those structural divisions of story-telling and when Todd's character elevated in story-telling.

My more clear answer: South Park - PC Principal.
