I only really know it's about pirates, and the first 4 episodes of the show.

It's a very long anime, but it's such a great story. I'm caught up with the anime, but the live action show inspired me to start the anime from the beginning again.

Sure. It's what I did.

Watching the stuff that the live action covered was a real chore, since it's like 50 episodes. But this new stuff I just got to had been pretty interesting.

Depends on what your threshold for 90s anime humor is.

Eh maybe. I mean, I like it, but the question is if you like other anime. If the answer is yes, then definitely go for it. If it's no then you can still try but it might not be your thing.

Also I recommend one pace instead of the pacing ever gets to you ...

This, think of it as a DBZ Kai where it cuts out the unnecessary fillers. Otherwise, read the manga. You can probably get through 5-10 chapters for how long a One Piece episode is.

The pacing is worse than the manga but it's still worth watching.

Except Little Garden that shit sucked in the anime.

Does Luffy use his full name this much in the anime?

IIRC, he does it a lot early in the beginning, but less and less as it goes on.

Live action Luffy was great. He brought a sort of magnetic charm and optimism that made you want to root for him. He made me want to join his crew too.

I mean, all five live action Strawhats just had a really comforting level of likeability, charisma, and chemistry, but Luffy in particular I thought was done well. Better than I ever thought a character like Luffy could work in live action, for sure.

Finding the right Luffy was important. Too many actors ether would come out too fake, or try to play the role in a cynical manner. They needed to find someone genuine. And they nailed it.

I always say if you enjoy the anime. If you get to the end of Enies Lobby switch to the manga. Because it becomes a chore to watch the anime due to how slowly its adapted.

as for watching the anime? Id say restart from the beginning. I loved the live action, but it took every single character moment I thought was most important to understanding that character, and changed it removing the subtlety of why it was important.

He's a bit less dumb and more openly supportive of people, which I think ups his likability.

In the manga:

Koby: Do you think someone like me has a chance of becoming a marine?
Luffy: How should I know? *picks nose*

Koby: looks thoughtful
Luffy: Go on, tell me about how you feel
Koby: I really want to be a marine but I don't know, I worry I can't do it
Luffy: You're going to be a great marine! I believe in you!

Ultimately both versions of Koby receive Luffy's friendship and respect and in the manga he's rooting for him too, but he's just so much more direct and openly interested and supportive of people in the live action series.

That said it's possible it gives him less room to grow as a person; a thing he did very slowly in the original imo.

Yeah, anime Luffy is really dumb as bricks and wouldn't really work in a live action setting, so making him a bit more emotionally intelligent and thoughtful did wonders for him. (I've only seen up to Little Garden, though.)

He still has the same core traits as his anime counterpart, but I appreciate not having to go "god, this guy's an idiot" once every couple episodes.

And his live action friendship with Koby is super wholesome.

He's still an idiot in the live action, its just less endearing and more of a "does this guy even know what he's doing?"

They have color chapters for the manga out all the way into the middle of Wano. So you can get pretty far reading a very enjoyable version of the manga, then once you run out of color chapters you can switch to the anime.

I recently discovered Hulu has the dub up to the end of fishman Island so while I was watching it in Netflix I have since jumped.

That is like the exact opposite of my impression of Luffy lol. Like I ask that same quote about anime Luffy like once per episode.

While in the live action, he comes off as naive, yeah, but never to the levels of stupid he is in the anime.
