that's a bit of an exaggeration when it's 10 of 300 employees being laid off...

Edit: looking into it further, it was 9 people from marketing and 1 from IT support. 0 developers.

Was about to say that this isn't surprising. All their Tomb Raider games were ridiculously expensive to make. Shadow is #11 on the all-time list.

Then I took a look at the article and like, 10 employees out of 300 isn't really that big of a deal anyway.

Shadow wasnt Crystal Dynamics! That was Eidos Montreal.

Regardless they sold insanely well, I think the 2013 one eventually became Squares highest selling game of all time. You know, a disappointment as Square would put it.

It became one of their highest selling games because of how often it was on sale for $5. There's a big difference between 20 million sales at $5 and 20 million at $60!

Thats absolutely fair but it did sell most of that in its first two years before those sales really got started! Mind you IIRC I got that game for 30 quid day of release so it definitely wasnt all $60 copies.

IIRC it recouped its development budget right away but not full cost including marketing and production. Six months to profitability is pretty good given that that game is still selling a decade later.
