Homer chokes out Bart but treats his daughter like princess. He needs to do better.

You must mean humor.

But for tough lessons, unconditional love, and protection. Uncle Phil and Carl Winslow.

Al Bundy was a good father. Terrible husband, but that's not what chart is measuring.

Bob frequently puts his own dreams in front of his kids. It's realistic, but it's not ideal. He's very supportive and a great husband.

Archie Bunker's gotta be low tier, right? That's basically the point.
Gomez Adams is a better Bob Belcher. Supportive of his kids, but provides for them better.
Mike Brady? Gotta be mid-tier at best.

The problem I see with the list is that it really doesn't differentiate being an asshole with being a bad father. Al Bundy was slightly below average father, but he always stood up for his kids when the time was right. Christ how many times did he beat up his daughters boyfriend when he found out they were cheating on her. He was just a Grade A asshole.

Al is a terrible dad. That's the point of the show. Peg is a terrible wife, Al is a terrible dad, and Bud and Kelly are terrible kids. They stick together and love each other when it comes down to it, but they're all terrible people.

Frank Costanza should be lower too. A lot of George's issues are clearly the result of his fucked up parents.

Dan Conner should be much higher. Anyone who's watched Roseanne would agree.

Hal should be lower. He's actually kind of a terrible dad which is part of the reason Lois has to be so insane.

Not at all. Thos isn't about the actor and Cliff Huxtable is easily one of the GOAT TV dad's (if not the greatest.)

As for Carl Winslow, he really wasn't the best father. Most of his episodes weren't even about him being a good dad and advice giving.

Lol yeah, but now that you mention Lois. She is THE best TV mom, hands down. The way how MiTM ended, it shot her up to number 1.

She had four assholes of boys that she had to keep in line, the husband was a bit of a pushover. She also had to deal with the eldest son who needed therapy. She would scare the shit out of anyone who mess with her boys. She was the glue that held the house together. She IS the foundation that held the house together. She beat Clair Huxtable.

Carl Winslow was a pretty good dad to his own biological children, Steve Urkel, and his adopted son 3J. He wasn't particularly preachy like some TV dads, but he was always there when they needed him and could be as accommodating or stern as the situation demanded but always supportive regardless of the circumstance.

So yeah, I'd put him on the list.

  1. The racist cops that harassed his son.
  2. The gang that ruin his sister in laws restaurant.
  3. "America's favorite dad" bribing Carl to drop the charges and Carl refuse to because he couldn't let his kids down.

Yeah, Dan had his anger issues but he always felt like a pretty solid dad, all things considered. I never watched that much Full House, but I'm having trouble thinking what would create such a divide between Danny Tanner and Steven Keaton.

There are a lot of TV dads missing here, notably Andy Taylor, Ward Cleaver, and Archie Bunker.

Just because - a solid dad moment from Ward:

I just started rewatching the show and you couldn't be more wrong.

Tim always makes efforts to better himself as a man. Being there for his kids is a huge lesson of the show and it's constantly reminded to you that he lost his father at an early age, so being a good dad to his kids means the most to him.

He also actively listens to his wifes needs. He's a classic screw up but, he always comes through in the end. As much as the show is rooted in "toxic masculinity" and what it means to "be a man." It shows that men can talk about their problems (Wilson) and there are a lot of great lessons to learn.

As an aside, I also really appreciate that the show actually shows a happy marriage. Down to the little things that make it realer than other shows. In other shows the husband cracks wise and the wife just stands there rolling her eyes while the laughtrack cackles along. I love that Jill actually laughs at Tims jokes. Those kinds of details make the show what it is.
