I feel like judgement calls would be a nightmare though. Is Persona 5's Joker a silent character? He yells out the names of his personas but doesn't have any other voice lines in the game How do visual novel characters apply where nobody makes actual noise? Yes. I think people who say silent protagonists have no character don't pay attention. There are a lot of ways to give characters personality other than dialogue.
