as far as i know, the second game is the only one that's considered good by the playerbase as a whole. 4 was awful

Tried replaying it recently on PS4 and holy SHIT I didn't remember the character models being so damn funny looking lol

I did not like it. I tapped out because of the story - and that was before it did the dumb twist - and because all the dungeons felt the same.

Sarah is ten times worse than Lymle. Even Meracle's scenes are annoying as ever, but at least she can tear through bosses in seconds.

i legitimately thought sarah's voice was an intended joke in her first appearance. but no, her acting was just that bad and some of the very worst i've ever heard in anything

I watched Maximilian's stream where the remake of the 2nd game was announced, and he asked "I've never played Star Ocean, but this is considered the one good one, right?", and everyone just said yeah.

I completely agree. I disliked it, even before the twist. At least it was better than 4.

Just a weird ass game. Spent a long time with just the first three characters before gaining any new ones, and by then youre 3/4 through the game. And then the backtracking. Then the random difficulty spikes. And how you barely gain exp. Idk, I wanted to like it but at a certain point I just couldnt keep playing it.

Star Ocean 4 is even worse.

Funny enough I recently started playing this one on my Steam deck. Still surprised I still have the official player guide to the game.

Phantasy Star 1-4 are peak sci-fi JRPG (okay maybe not 3). And that series started in the 80s.

Funny you mention that. PSO2's "Mother" plot is basically a not shit way of doing SO3's story.

Phantasy Star IV is an all time favorite. Peak 16 bit RPG, especially in terms of its storytelling (those manga cut scenes!) and visual textures. Absolutely spoiled me, in those departments, when I first played it as a youngster, and only a few times afterwards (the Lunar: Complete games, Skies of Arcadia) gave me a similar sustained high. The gameplay isn't revolutionary, but it's peak old school turn based shit - much better polished than, say, your Lufias and Breaths of Fire. Not insanely difficult but capable of kicking your ass if you're not prepared, and sometimes even if you are.

Hell, I love the soundtrack too - janky ass Genesis music at its peak. I remember waking up one Friday morning on a snow day, popping the game in, and letting Motavia Town play for like 30 minutes while I made everyone breakfast, and now I associate waking up and seeing snow with the desert town music of a 30 year old video game. I'm pretty biased obviously but I'm sure Phantasy Star IV could beat up your dad.

I like Star Ocean 2 also, and not so much Star Ocean 3 (though I might play it again if there were a well polished remake, hint hint), and never played any of the others.

I've loved every Star Ocean game except for 5.

I'm sad that puts me in the minority, but it's definitely one of my favorite series. I'm currently replaying them all in excitement for the SO2 release.
