anyone think this could be avian flu related? i recall a lot of people saying that its been evolving and making a move towards humans.

Disease X is not a specific real disease that is being watched or studied. It's a placeholder name for any disease we might have to deal with in the future, that we're not familiar with (as opposed to one we are familiar with, like flu or ebola, having a widespread outbreak).

From the point of view of someone in 2018 or so, covid could have been an example of a "disease X".
