I'm glad you avoided it both times.
I've been fortunate that I still haven't personally ran anything over, though I have been in a vehicle when others ran animals over. Not really similar to your story, however the other day I saw my first coyote and it casually crossed the street during a time when we had a red light and there was no oncoming traffic from the other side, so it was able to leisurely stroll across.
