We know it will reference all 16 main series games (I am not sure if cards for the sequel games like X-2 will be done):

For FFI I can see six cards representing the base classes with a transform ability to turn them into the classes after class change along with cards for the Four Fiends and Garland with a transform into Chaos.

For FFII I see the main characters, Dreadnought and the Emperor at the minimum.

For III I am not fully sure if they will do the DS remake characters or Onion Knights.

For IV I see either two Cecil cards or one where he transforms along with the playable cast, Four Fiends, Golbez and a Zemus/Zeromus transform card.

For V it will be tricky with how many job classes there are, so maybe some characters might be represented by specific classes.

For VI would likely mean a lot of cards with a large cast.

For VII, VIII and IX could mean the same but with the three PS1 games being among the most popular they will likely have the lion's share of the cards referenced.

For X I see more of the same as above with Aeons all being used. Maybe a Jecht card that transforms into Braska's Final Aeon.

For XI I am not sure as I have not played either online game.

For XII I would hope all of the Espers (as they reference Tactics) appear.

For XII maybe more transform cards to do something similar to the paradigm shift feature of the game.

For XIV please see XI.

For XV I could just see a handful of characters (main, guest, and Ardyn) as well.

For XVI I have not played yet (no PS5).

I know that was a lot of text, but it was on my mind.

I hope the fat packs are not that much. I remember when they were $40, but now they are around $45.

Nah they don't make good equipment anymore

Kaldra Compleat is the only good widely used one and prior to that it was Batterskull from 2011.

They will be expensive, because of licensing. Same as LOTR and Dr Who.

That said Im probably going all in on this set.

I could see Gilgamesh having an ability that helps reduce cost of equipment.

I could see a Midgar land that taps for one or two mana of any color, but at the beginning of each upkeep it's controller loses life.

I would expect about half of the cards that you listed. FFI, for instance, is only likely to have a WoL and Garland card for characters, and if they did have a Chaos card it would be referencing Dissidia and not FFI (ignoring the plot bits that tie them together). Similarly the sheer quantity of the FF cast is waaaay too large for a set and it would end up basically just being an almost creature exclusive set on them alone. This is especially true with what you were talking about in your XII desires as adding in summons in any real capacity would blitz up the amount to ludicrous levels, versus the more likely scenario of them just having one for each color (plus Bahamut for colorless).

Shadowspear t-bag you a bit too much? Or was it Colossus Hammer that made you forget about the recent equipment options?

I had only gotten a decent amount of stuff from the LOTR set (prerelease kit and a handful of set boosters along with a Walmart exclusive tin with three set boosters and two promos) and have not seen much in stores aside from that. I did get some really good pulls (two of The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters notably).

As for Doctor Who, my wife is a huge fan of the show and wants one of the Commander decks, but she is not sure which one yet.

I do hope to go all in on the FF set.

One Cid, multiple Cid arts, a la Nazgul.
As a large set, it could have a number of legendaries comparable to the Lord of the Rings set. I'd expect each numbered game to have at least one main protagonist and either one villain or side-character as legendaries.

I don't want to guess at mechanics, but I could see something like Spell Mastery used to represent spells like Fire-Fira-Firaga.

Summons being tokens might be the most interesting flavor take.

I'm hoping for a good Bahamut dragon to put in my Ur-Dragon deck.

There is a lot they could do though and as a long time Final Fantasy fan I'm looking forward to it.

The King of Dragons has to have a card, I just am not sure what version he will be based off of though. I could see it being X's version.

Shadowspear sure though I don't think it's playable without Urza's Saga.

Colossus Hammer is not what I'd call a good equipment. Hammertime is a strong deck, but it's because the equipment enablers are strong.

Same can kind of be said about Kaldra and SFM, but Kaldra cast for full retail is still a threat that ends games.

Colossus Hammer is not what I'd call a good equipment. Hammertime is a strong deck, but it's because the equipment enablers are strong.

Same can kind of be said about Kaldra and SFM, but Kaldra cast for full retail is still a threat that ends games.
Cards shouldn't be evaluated in a vacuum. Shadowspear is excellent in part because of Urza's Saga, yes, but that is still an extremely relevant aspect: it is very good in what is arguably one of the most busted packages that has ever been a thing in Magic. Hammer is in similar vein: just because one deck wants it doesn't change the fact that it is individually so strong that the deck exists in the first place, and it is more showing that Equipment as a type isn't something that just anyone wants and that it's for very specific decks more than anything.

And pointing out Kaldra is a threat is moot in this context as it + all of the other Living Weapons qualify on that front and it is sheerly that Kaldra is the best is the reason it is used over all of the non-Batterskull options. Going further with the logic would mean that there were no good equipment pieces printed prior to Batterskull as none of the others are just "game ending threats by themselves" as they lack Living Weapon. A line of logic that is clearly absurd. As mentioned before context is something that should never be removed from a card. Skullclamp is a crappy card if you don't have any small creatures in your deck, but I'm not going to suddenly start calling it crappy because I am somehow limited in how my deck is made because of it. It's not a crappy card because you don't just win by having it out in the same as with Kaldra.

Inversely you could point out that if no equipment was good anymore than equipment was *never* good as we easily have a vastly higher power level for Equipment, with two old Equipment cards being the lion's share of the old equipment's power level as an average and the rest being being mostly mediocre. Your entire complaint comes across as pure nostalgia in the same way that it is with people complaining about how "EDH ruined MTG" when all it did was change the evaluation on cards from being "utterly unplayable garbage" to "made for EDH/Commander."

Cards are evaluated in their environment, sure. Shadowspear spent a solid year being unplayable. Hammer was widely laughed at until Sigarda's Aid made Hammertime viable.

The environment got better for them, they didn't become more powerful.

Commanders popularity did not just change card evaluation. It changed card design.

Fwiw nostalgia isn't even a factor here. All of the Swords cycle are terrible now, Jitte probably would be a SB card for creature mirrors in modern now were it legal.

I will play and collect. I am interested to see how they do the Commander decks. There are 4 decks so maybe a deck for I-VI, VII-IX, X-XIII, and XIV-XVI.

I doubt the decks will be focused across multiple games in that manner.

They will want a cohesive theme

Cloud, Terra, Tidus, Lightning I'd guess

I wonder if that will be a transform card from creature to equipment. Or they skip the creature and do Omega.
