People were saying this was a slept on GOTY a few years back?

Like, the game is OK, but calling it GOTY tier is really setting it up for failure. It does have decent beat 'em up gameplay, but I hate this open world format.

Go here, talk to a bunch of people, none voice actes. Most are boring cliche animu subplots.

The fighting styles are silly. Like, the martial arts one you get from the dude that could bob and weave was kind of cool, but how is the third one from the chick any different than your brawler one? It just makes me slow and vulnerable.

The plot moves SO slow and uninteresting, and you have to go through so many conversations and fetch quests to make any progress. I have to shop around for a bunch of picky hobos to get to the next boss fight?

I tried giving this game a chance since it was for sale for $7, but Separate Ways really washed the bad taste out of my brain, and now I think I just want to move on to MK1 or something good.

Can anyone tell me what's so great about this game?

most of your post is just opinion stuff but this is actively just wrong. beast mode lets you tank hits and push through with super armor and reduced damage, gives you crazy destructive movesets for every weapon in the game that make taking out crowds easy, has a bunch of grapples that are really cool looking, and in general just makes crowd control really fun and entertaining. are you just not putting points into styles to increase their movesets? because it plays nothing like the normal brawler style

I definitely wouldn't ever put a Yakuza game as GOTY but man oh man do I enjoy the series a lot. Even games that are universally looked down on as a weaker entry in the series like Yakuza 3 I absolutely loved and got the platinum on. I loved the orphanage aspect of it.

The characters and the dialogues between them is just outstanding. Especially when Kiryu is involved. The zany sidequests you can do and just the charm and layout of the city and what you can do is just fun and relaxing to me. Solid series.

I actually haven't put any points into it yet. I just got to the part where you play as the eye patch dude for like.....40 minutes straight before you can save your game. Really boring sequence where he tames some drunk by being polite to him. I couldn't stand anymore and saved and stopped as soon as that sequence was over, I really have no interest in learning about this guy after playing as Kiryu for the previous portion.

So you are right, I haven't experimented with Beast mode much, but Brawler already seems like the default where I can wreck people with furniture. And the level where you fought your way through the Yakuza building to have a 1v1 fight with that Yakuza boss WAS really cool, but why is that stuff so few and far between? So many pointless fetch quests, and silly side quests in between. Yes, I know I can skip the side quests, but wanting to skip game content isn't a good sign.

The thing that fans love about the Yakuza games is that the story is serious and dramatic, but the side quest are over the top and wacky. I know some people don't like that and want it to be 100% serious all the time, but this isn't the series for that. If you want fully serious crime drama, then you're better off playing the Mafia series, or Sleeping Dogs.

So you are right, I haven't experimented with Beast mode much, but Brawler already seems like the default where I can wreck people with furniture.

brawler gives you a basic moveset with weapons that mostly focuses on single targets. beast gives you different movesets for every weapon that are geared around doing huge crowd control damage. for example, if you pick up a bike with the brawler your moveset will mostly be straight swings forward. if you do it with beast, kiryu will do big spins that cover a lot of area and do a lot of damage at the cost of the weapon breaking faster.

when you power it up more he gets moves where he can grab people and swing them around more or less like makeshift weapons, and toss people into each other for even more crowd control

anyway if you arent vibing with the sidequests or the characters you might as well stop. yakuza games rely heavily on you being interested in that stuff and if you're not you're just wasting time. those are things about the game the playerbase enjoys

I know Souls games are good based on popular opinion and many reviews. But when i play them i dont have fun with them. In my opinion theyre bad and feel like a man made of paper is acting like he has weight and like youre running through mud.

But i keep randomly trying souls games based on reviews and general popular opinion but so far i dont enjoy them. I really want to enjoy them as much as some of their fans do.

The game doesn't require much more than button mashing. But no, I get that there are dodge mechanics, circling your enemy's defenses. They seem to reserve this for boss battles, that take forever to get to between you running errands for everyone and having forced conversations that aren't interesting at all.

I liked the boss battle against the Yakuza boss, and the guy with the tonfa batons. Every other battle encounter is just choose your own button mash to get through, no challenge or skill required. Kiryu just beats the crap out of everyone, which is fun at first, but gets old.

Yeah, this tells me you've barely played the game, without taking any time to actually learn the mechanics or anything.

It's clearly not for you. Yakuza is extremely story driven, and has a lot of mechanics to learn, if you so choose. You clearly just want to be able to button mash through a game with very little thought, so this isn't the series for you.

I don't think it's a "boring" series, but it's pretty mid to decent, at best, IMO (~5.5-7.5/10).

I like the side-content, with how wacky and expansive it can be, and I prefer its take on open-world/sandbox than most other open-worlds/sandboxes, and some of the characters can be really likeable (like, Ichiban!)

with that said, the gameplay always ends up feeling repetitive to the point where I avoid most of the optional fights, the stories end up having a lot of contrivances to put a lot of the characters together (why the Yakuza games with multiple protagonists are my least favorite), and you can only take the corrupt government officials thing for so long.

that's why I don't think I'll buy any other games in the franchise.

I'm playing Yakuza 0. I got to the eye patch guy but I have Street Fighter 6, REmake 4 w/Sep Ways, I still need to play the Final Fantasy Remake before Rebirth comes out, MK1 and Armored Core. This game is just sooooooooo boring compared to all my alternatives. It feels like it was made in 2007.

The thing that fans love about the Yakuza games is that the story is serious and dramatic, but the side quest are over the top and wacky. 7 bucks for Yakuza 0 even if that isn't my favorite is slander, dawg. I'd pay seven dollars again for it or any game in the series. It was mostly just a fun beat'em up series with often serious main plots and wackier side stories and just a fun game of the culture of Japan.

I say was because the latest was a turn based rpg whether the Judgment series continues on, I guess it can because the controversy earlier about Yagami was settled.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 I thought was really fun and liberating it has a new engine and you just play only as Kiryu. Someone here can step in and say how it is missing a small city you never visit (sorry nerds) but I think it was one of my favorites.

Sure you are stepping into the middle of the story a bit but 0 was the game that surprisingly hit big in the west and came out before 6 (actually). I think I got that right. So there are changes in tone and character in Kiwami 1 especially. Majima was voiced by Mark Hamill in the original Yakuza game for the PS2. There was a whole fucking lot more common swearing too. Shit a ton.

Yeah Kiwami 2 is kind of an odd starting point, but it could be worse. I'm sure some people tried to jump in at 6 or 7 (Like a Dragon). For me, 0 was the third game I played, after Kiwami 1 and 2.

Yeah Kiwami 2 is kind of an odd starting point, but it could be worse. I'm sure some people tried to jump in at 6 or 7 (Like a Dragon). For me, 0 was the third game I played, after Kiwami 1 and 2.

I started at Yakuza 4. I was just saying I dunno maybe if Yakuza 0 is too dry and cut scene heavy try Yakuza Kiwami 2. It has cut scenes too but I found that a blast to play. Glad TC didn't take a chance on 5. Heh.

(Also I didn't get into the series until Yakuza 0 was making waves, I just decided to start partway through because a friend I know randomly bought that game and I bartered for it).
