A little background on this deep cut.

It was written and preformed by a band known as Led Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin was a rock and roll band that had a bit of success and were mostly active through the 1970s. You can find a few of their other works out there if you do a little digging.) in 1971.

The song has what has been described as a "Medieval Fantasy Vibe" and tells the story of a woman who wishes to buy her way into heaven and skip purgatory.

It has a pretty catchy tune and a rather memorable (IMO) solo near the end.

It has gotten a bit of airplay in the past in some markets. But would you consider it to have been a popular choice or is it more of a "deep cut"? If anyone was around during the time it release (and subsequent years), i would love to hear your opinion on whether it made an impact or not!

Have you ever heard this tune before?

I've never heard of it, so probably not.

Sounds like Catholic propaganda from what you describe. Damn papists and their indulgences.

Yes. It gets regular play on radio. 95% of classic rock radio stations play the popular stuff.

I've heard it once. I don't understand why it's considered such a great song, but whatever.

I wasn't around for its heyday, but it gets regular play on the classic rock stations here. Heart also did a great cover of it in front of the original band and also the Obamas.

Depends on how you define popular. Among their catalogue it really isn't that popular but it is one of their most well known and iconic songs for sure. That doesn't equate to popularity though.

I also chuckled at your description of them as a band that "had a bit of success" Well played.

Kinda just because of name recognition.

But in the Led Zeppelin pantheon, its pretty damn weak sauce honestly. Its fine but they have SO many better songs across the board.

Stairway to Heaven was my music instructor's favourite song. He said if he taught recording and mixing a project for final year students would be to do a cover of the song in their own style just so he would have extra recordings of it.

Depends on the demographic. I imagine most younger than 24 year olds have probably never heard of it, but everyone older than that probably has.

Led Zeppelin?

First off, the spelling of lead is incorrect. Secondly a Zeppelin composed of such a heavy element would surely fail to fly.

I dunno about that one. They definitely were the genesis of a lot of great music, but those genres really hit their stride in the next generation.

This is one of those topics where you say something that you hope will get people "angry" so they will "respond", right? Oh boy, will I get to see one of those "arguments" I've heard so much about?
