So apparently a new hack called Perfect Crystal released today. I can't post the link here but the creator posted a large youtube video detailing all his changes.

The whole gist is that the game had to bad descisions with pokemon stats, availability, level curve, movepool, team rocket and gym leader teams.
He fixes all that without really changing the actual game. This is still gen 2 pokemon. No new features added, just fixes to some of the bad decisions.

How do you feel about this? Was gen 2 bad? Is this hack an improvement or are the flaws part of the charm.

This the one that SmithPlays Pokemon has been working on, right? I've been following his work for a while. If the finished product is finally ready to go, then I definitely want to check it out soon.

HG/SS was a great improvement for a legit game

crystal clear is an amazing romhack that made the game super enjoyable. loved how gym leaders you adjusted their levels by how many badges you had. so each one had a rank 1 team and went all the way up to rank 16 teams. much better level scaling and got rid of the need for HMs. open world so can go in any order. definitely one to check out.

gen 2 is the only one i haven't beat besides crystal clear. beat the remake many times and have beaten every gen including the 3rd version or sequels besides for 2nd gen. was thinking about finally starting up crystal. but i'll probably just check this one out instead. i've seen plenty of youtubers do speed/challenge runs in gen 2 and yea the game is definitely coded better than gen 1 but it's still pretty poorly done. especially kanto when all the gym leaders besides blue have like level 40s pokemon and then there's janine that's like as strong as like the 5th gym leader. so hopefully perfect crystal boosted her up. hopefully all of kanto is stronger than the elite 4.

one i see was started in 2018 and newest update was october 2020. i'll paste what the original 1.0 version says. does this sound like the same game?

• All 251 Pokemon catchable.
• Pokemon that normally evolve with trades, evolve through the use of stones.
• Stones and items that could only be obtained through Mystery Gift available at department stores.
• The GS Ball and Celebi event can be triggered after Mount Silver has been unlocked.
• Fixed a bunch of glitches such as the problems with some of Kurts balls and several items.
• Increased opponents levels to match HGSS (Except Red who has Level 100 Pokemon just for fun, he is supposed to be the best trainer in the world after all). This is mainly noticeable in late Johto and Kanto.
• Made all Gym Leaders rematchable. Just talk to them again and they will ask for a rematch.
• Removed the badge boosts and the extra chances the AI has to miss on status moves to create parity between the player and the AI.
• Ho-Oh and Lugia have their signature moves when you encounter them.
• Reuseable TMs.
• Hold down B to run.
• Restored Japanese sprites for the Beauty, Sage, Medium, female Swimmer and Fisherman.
• Simplified the clock reset procedure on the intro screen. Simply hold down Down, B and Select. No need to enter in a password.

Sounds cool, I might have to give it a try. Crystal Clear has been my favorite Gen 2 hack so far.

yea that's definitely the new one. guess it's built off of HG/SS? definitely need to check this out.

it didn't really fix that much though, i've been nuzlocking HG and the level curve is awful because the game after the 4th gym lets you do the next 3 gyms in any order. a cool idea, but that also forces them to lower the levels of everything to allow you to do that. also the wild pokemon available basically cap out at like 25 which makes grinding awful, which you'll need to do because the last gym leader Clair is a big step up level wise

the gym leaders also still don't use many new pokemon for some reason. Half the gym leaders in Johto don't use any gen 2 mons at all.

Every time I think about GSC's level curve I think about how you go from fighting level 5 Pokemon in Ilex Forest and then immediately to level 13 on Route 34

Gen 2 sucks ass. Level curve is atrocious, pokemon vairety is atrocious, the story has no pacing or tension, and Johto is effectively unfinished because they wanted to cram Kanto in, eccept Kanto has nothing interesting in it.

This is the video and romhack in question. It's a romhack of Crystal itself, not HG/SS. It should be safe to link to since it doesn't include a ROM download (you have to find the ROM and IPS patch it yourself) and the video and attached documentation should explain the changes made.

Thank goodness for the change to Pokemon evolutions.

One thing I really like about this romhack: they didn't implement the modern physical/special move split system (because that would be too drastic of a change and wouldn't feel like Crystal) but they swapped Dark moves to be physical and Ghost moves to be Special because that makes more logical sense. Most of the early Dark moves (like Bite and Crunch) are physical in the modern system, most of the Pokemon that learn Dark moves have higher Attack stats, the only notable Ghost move in gen 2 (Shadow Ball) is special in the modern system, and both Ghost-type lines in gen 2 have higher SpAtk stats. Lick doesn't make sense as a special move, but having it be special does make using Gastly in the early game a lot easier.

The vast majority of Pokemon who get Dark moves or Shadow Ball (whether for STAB or for coverage) benefit from this change, while only a very select few like Houndoom or Raikou will actually lose power on these moves due to this change.

That didn't fix anything. You still fight level 1X Rattata after going up against a level 35 Steelix in that game. It sucks.

Yeah I was confused. I first played Perfect Crystal late last year, so it releasing today would be some timey wimey weirdness.

I managed to convert the patched rom into a cia so I could install it on my homebrewed 3DS. Only got to play for a little bit (started with Totodile and caught a Geodude) before I stopped for the day to go watch the AEW PPV. I'm hyped to play more of this though.

Haven't watched the video in full, but this looks like a great romhack. Gold and Crystal were the first games I ever owned, but I never fully beat either of them. I think the farthest I got was halfway through Kanto before having enough.

This morning I caught a Teddiursa and a Mareep for my team (Teddiursa only spawns in Dark Cave in the morning) and then this afternoon I cleared out Sprout Tower, beat Falkner for the first badge (his Noctowl was a bitch), and made my way through Union Cave to Azalea Town. Might play more tonight.

I'm still thinking about other team members I might want to use later on. I might even ditch Totodile and roll without a starter.

Gen 2 was great, but it had some flaws that kept it from being even greater, and IMO pretty much all of those flaws were properly addressed in this rom hack. The main one that wasn't (Kanto being so stripped down and disappointing) is going to be dealt with more in a future update they're planning, but they already partly addressed it by beefing up the Kanto gym leader teams into a proper postgame challenge.

I like this guy's philosophy behind the majority of changes. He seemed motivated not by just correcting the obvious issues like availability of Gen 2 Pokemon, the level curve, etc., but he also put heavy emphasis on cultivating an identity for the game based on what was already there.

I'll definitely try this out. Gen 2 is probably my favorite just in terms of aesthetics. But I can't imagine ever playing vanilla Gen 2 again without all the quality romhacks have added over the years.

Currently in Ecruteak City. I caught a Scyther in the bug catching contest and added it to my team (it's making very good use of the newly buffed and Bug-type Cut) then I got the Eevee from Bill and bred it with a Snubbull so I could get a baby Eevee that inherited Charm. Gotta give it the Exp Share (which you get really early in this rom hack and is an absolute blessing to have) and get it caught up with the rest of my team.
