When actually driving it is irrelevant. Only time that matters is when parking, specifically parallel parking near other vehicles. Which is a situation Ive never been in.

I park on top of the sign.

If you align with the sign someone is going to pull out a microscope to prove you actually are beyond the plane

Paid or unpaid, the "correct" answer depends on local ordinances and specific situation.

Meh, I can't see the entire front of my car in the drivers seat and drive it just fine. I do have an idea of where it is, though, so it's not like I'm driving blind.

don't make up scenarios to justify you double parking

Given the wording of the sign. One should be able to park aligned with the sign. However I would still make a half a car back.

There are plenty of odd scenarios when parking. Just look at what's happening and park accordingly. There's no single, magic method. Not really sure where you're comming from, here.

I've seen cars aligned with the sign given tickets by overly zealots cops. I wouldn't take the chance.

I don't think you need to be a full foot back but I'll stay like 6 inches back just to be safe.

If there isn't room for a car length in front,I would try and park somewhere else. I rather walk more than deal with anyone over it.

You probably shouldn't be behind the wheel if you think like this.

Half a car length, too many times I've been boxed in because the person in front and behind me are only a couple inches from my bumper. That way I know I can get out.

You two do realize that not knowing where it is actually makes things safer, right? You end up driving as if your car takes up a bit more space than it actually does which reduces the chance of a collision.

If there's room to park a full car length back, I'll do so and let the sign be someone else's problem.

Also insuring that anyone driving a big ass-truck in the city find themselves needing to find somewhere else to park.

There is a spot on the street next to my apartment that I can just barely fit my Prius into. Single spot between two drive cut ins with yellow paint at both ends of the spot. Got a good spot tonight.
