I'm wanting to buy some new games and currently considering Lies of P and MK1.

I was thinking of throwing either Armored Core or a new RPG in there and people keep ranting about the quality of BG3 so I had to ask.

But I don't always gravitate towards this D&D style build your own character type world. My friends begged me to get on Diablo 4 with them and I ignored them out of disinterest.

Would BG3 win me over? Is it THAT good?

It is entirely possible to ignore the CAC aspect and play one of the Origin characters that are pre-established. That said, you will still have no shortage of build decisions to make while leveling up all party members including possible multi classing.

The game is also in the CRPG format, where you're given different ways to solve problems and progress the story. You'll have dialogue trees, party member relationships, and not much in the way of spectacle cutscenes. If you want something on rails without much thought involved, you will not like BG3.

I love AC6 personally. But there's also a few new RPGs out somewhat recently, including a few major studio releases and indie darlings both.

I've never played DnD once in my life and I think BG3 is one of the greatest games of all time. I have played plenty of old Bioware games though, so DnD systems weren't unfamiliar to me.

BG3 takes a lot of liberties from the 5e system for it to work well as a video game. I believe you can be someone who isn't too fond of D&D can still enjoy BG3, because they made adjustments for it to work within the medium.

What about Wasteland 2 or 3? Any form of isometric RPG where you have a lot of choices and ways to build a character. If you liked KOTOR, you may be fine enough. I love DND and particularly 5E so BG3 was a no brainer for me.

What is it about D&D that you don't like?

People who like breaking convention and rules seem to enjoy it the most. Killing characters you shouldn't. Approaching encounters in a variety of ways

For me personally, I'm enjoying it a lot because it reminds me of PlayStation era JRPGs. The quests and areas are all specifically made. No fetch quests, random loot, or other MMO elements that companies pad open world games with.

It's a very story-rich experience with a ton of choices and different ways to approach a situation. If that appeals to you, you'll probably like it. The combat is turn-based and outcomes are decided by dice rolls, so if that sounds good, it's good for you. If that sounds bad because of difficulty, you could just play on a lower difficulty and round out some of the rough edges of combat. If you just dislike turn-based RNG combat on principle, you might not like it.

I personally think the system works very well and it satisfying.

Picking spells in D&D can be very, very daunting. It's one reason I've never played a Wizard in a proper 5e campaign. I get paralyzed by choice. Which spells to learn, which to prepare, which to leave on the table. Every spell has its uses. Baldur's Gate 3 is pretty forgiving; a class that normally changes its prepared spells during a long rest can just swap them any time in BG3, so clerics, druids, paladins, and wizards are especially versatile that way.

Overall...If you really, really hate building characters, you can just play a majority (or all) martial classes (Rogue, Fighter, Barbarian) and half-casters (Paladin and Ranger) because they make relatively few choices during level-ups and mostly just unlock new features and benefits per level which are automatically implemented. Half-casters get fewer spells and fewer spell slots in exchange for some added martial benefits, so they're a good middle-ground if you want to do some magic but not deal with a massive spell list.

I dont like DND because I dont like role playing and using my imagination. Also had a friend who would drag out the talking/roleplaying sections.

I like BG3 a lot though, both because of the ability to render the world, and the constraints of it being in video game form has on how the scenarios play out. Also the writing is very good too, at least where I am in Act 1. Cant speak of the overall writing but the moment to moment stuff

If you like Kotor and Dragon Age and maybe mass effect it should be a prefect fit for you.

Also as big as the game is, it doesnt feel tiring. Its not full open world. Actually the areas ARENT THAT big and it works to its favor since it makes areas pretty dense with content and also helps with ita pacing. A lot of the play time does come from tweaking your characters and checking what works for battles. Once you have a grasp of how combat works, it becomes even better since there ARE SO MANY approaches to battles.

Same thing applies to story progression and this is where the game shines. No other game comes close to the level of freedom it gives you to approach anything.

Played DND as a kid. When I was a late teen I got into the FASA IPs (Shadowrun, Earthdawn, Battletech). I also own pretty much any video game tied with DND or the FASA ips. I like the BG games and Neverwinter (OG) the most. With 5e I like going out of the norm build

BG3 is a single player game first and the single player experience is going to be widely different than a multiplayer experience.

Yeah. It works perfectly as a single player game since that means you have full control of every party member. You can freely switch between them and engage in conversations with NPCs using any of them.

You can also respec the abilities of your entire party (including origin characters) if you like their aesthetic and story but not their class.

I have two games going. One solo and one coop. Both are amazing times and I've already seen many many different scenarios and how they play out in both. It's great both solo and co-op
