80/80

Anyway, I'm renting some rooms from a guy in town. One is a business location, one is an apartment. But I'm just using both as businesses at the moment. I've had issues with the landlord before, with him entering my apartment whenever he wants and giving his friends keys and letting them go in and such. That finally seems to have been sorted out and stopped.

But I'm getting 2 electric bills, one for the business side, and I e for the apartment. Which is fine, except the apartment is currently only powering a refrigerator and maybe a couple of lamps. But the power bill is several times larger than the business side, which requires constant power.

Looking into it further, and it looks like my apartment actually powers the landlord's business which he runs all week. That would explain why I'm being charged so much for basically nothing. >_>

Gonna talk to him and see what's going on. Though, he generally is reasonable and makes it up to us for stuff like that... but still. Some of the fuses in the box are labeled as going to his room. And he was keeping the power on with no tenants too.

Idk, there's just no reason my power bill should over 4x higher than the other while not powering anything.

Ok, so I am. >_>
He has some of the wiring from my apartment powering some of his. He hooked up his air conditioner to the part that I'm powering and I've been paying for him to keep his place cool.

He claims he told us, but no one remembers but him. He gave me $120 back for this month, and said he'll pay some on it in the future... but I'm still kinda pissed.

The fuck? Make him fix it or terminate the lease. pay "some of it"? that's fucking unacceptable.

Pretty sure that violates at least a couple of laws regarding renting out properties. You might want to see about getting a lawyer regardless of whether hes willing to make it right currently as Ive seen how nasty situations like this can get.

...and I'm fairly sure that's just downright criminal. I'd be calling the police. Or at the very least a lawyer.

Is it in your lease? It doesn't matter if he told you or not, you need to check your lease to see if there's anything about this on there.

Honestly between this and him and his friend sneaking in, you should really consider getting a lawyer. You probably could have sued him 5 times over by now and won all of them. It really sounds like he's screwing you every way he can.

He claims he did, but no one else remembers that happening except him. So, I don't think it did. I definitely would remember if I'm supposed to pay part of his electric bill.

And, idk, I'll talk it over with Mom and see what she thinks we should do legally. Might have to look into a lawyer.

This is illegal in VA. Landlords can only legally enter an apartment for certain reasons and even then they have to provide at least 24 hour notice unless it's an emergency.

Depending on your county/income, there are options where lawyers will do it free (to you). Try and look it up

Failing that, its not unheard of to set up some sort of arrangement so that you can pay in installments instead of all at once, as my cousin had to do that when dealing with a legal dispute in small claims court a while back.
