The US Speaker of the House lost a no-confidence vote for the first time, and was ousted from their position.

With recent decisions and actions by McCarthy, bipartisan cooperation to elect a new Speaker is all but impossible.

The Republicans have 2 choices:

1) Bring up an alternative to McCarthy that is moderate that the MAGA crowd will hate, and table a motion to remove asap all over again

2) Actually entertain the idea of electing a MAGA Repub as Speaker. No one likes this.

It turns out that "everyone vote this way" doesn't work for the red team.
It's basically dixiecrats all over again, just for the other guys.

They've been running hard on being edgy assholes with no deliverables to their goblin base.

It's all the parts from Saturday morning cartoons you remember where the villains plot, lose and run away to fight among themselves for dominance.

They are a cult, pure and simple.

Given how extremist they have become, this kind of fracture was inevitable. As is the shrinking of their base as this bad faith entity disguised as a political party gets more and more ridiculous and less and less easy for people to tolerate.

The only question is, how much damage will this cult do to our democracy and to the lives of every day people before they finally lose enough elections that they are forced to reform? Given that Rush and Fox spent decades brainwashing a chunk of the electorate, I would say we have a while to go yet before we are able to consistently out vote these MAGA clowns.

In before November GOP spin: If the dems didnt vote to get rid of the speaker the government wouldnt be shutting down. Its their fault.

Whoa. I was already thinking number two as the default. No one sensible would want the job if they knew the fringe was going to oust them at the drop of a hat.

McCarthy was making concessions left and right just to get the job. I doubt there are others as desperate as he was. I also don't remember Boehner willing to perform circus flips for his confirmation way back when (exaggeration).

It'll be Gym Jordan trying to feed the mogwais before midnight.

this seems a possible option. they want the chaos anyway.

Seven Republicans would have to side with Democrats to elect a Democrat speaker, while it would take ten to twenty Democrats to side with Republicans to elect a Republican speaker.

Which is the sounder math?
