I'm hyper self conscious so I always move away or cross the sidewalk when I see approaching women especially at night.

if the airpods are anything like the sony over-ear anc headphones (wh1000xm3) it probably has some feature that lets you hear your surroundings very clearly. i forgot the name of the feature but i swear i can hear better with my headphones and that feature activated than my own ears lol.

I've been guilty of this during my college years. Got really lucky that nothing ever happened to me. Now when I do run, it's either on a treadmill or sunrise early in the morning.

They definitely can but in terms of runners getting assaulted/kidnapped/whatever, men are probably a very small percentage of victims compared to women

Though admittedly I'm pulling that out of my ass and maybe some studies have been done showing it's about the same level of danger no matter who you are

if the airpods are anything like the sony over-ear anc headphones (i have the wh1000xm3) it probably has some feature that lets you hear your surroundings very clearly. for the sony anc headphones its called ambient mode and i swear i can hear my surroundings better with it enabled than my own ears lol. the wh1000xm3 has a mic on both of its cups that's why it can pick up the surroundings so clearly. it looks like the airpods also have a mic on the side based on pics.

The new Apple Airpods Pro have a transparent mode that's honestly incredible, music is crystal clear but when people talk to you they come through just as clearly. It also automatically lowers the music volume when you start talking which is kind of annoying to me but also probably helpful to some people.

I've heard they can be used like hearing aids so I'm actually interested in finally getting a pair.

I'm not fully deaf but I have trouble hearing conversations in crowded noisy places. It's like my brain has turned down the dialog settings to 2 and the ambient background noise up to 10 :(

From what I've seen in reviews the AirPod Pros can be adjusted to greatly help with situations like mine

I spent most of my teenage years as a distance and cross country runner. Granted, the tech wasn't like today in 2000, but I can't imagine not being able to hear my surroundings. It was also nice to just be out in nature running with nothing but my thoughts.

I know it is a preference thing, but especially the loss of situational awareness seems weird to me regardless of men or women.

This. We usually aren't being targeted for the same reasons as women, but men can and have been attacked when out alone at night. Especially in the city.

Music > city noise. But I agree, situational awareness is important for everyone. Not just for intentional threats, but accidental ones too. It's not quite the same as jogging, but I see so many college students on bikes with just zero awareness of how many cars have almost hit their dumb asses.

Yeah. I have six sisters, so I understand what it's like for women but I got ambushed by a complete stranger in broad daylight. There was nothing I could have done to prevent it other than just not go for a run.

My brother gets harassed in daylight. We live around the corner from gangland and well he's white.

He's not too bothered by it he's smaller enough to carry really only his Id and cell phone on him.

Nothing beats watching a bicyclist hit a low retaining wall because they were texting while riding.

Maybe Ive been lucky. Ive been doing night runs with music since 1989. Currently live in a very large city. I keep it to main well lit routes, vary my routes, never been messed with. Ive had a few run ins during the day with dogs and people. Mostly untrained off leash dogs. Ive had more problems in rural areas by far trucks will go on the shoulder to make you jump off the road, throw shit, threaten. Go down the wrong street day or night its going to be a problem.

I take walks really late at night because I'm a misanthrope and don't want to encounter other humans, and I feel fairly safe because it's a quiet neighborhood, but when I do actually see someone else out that late or a car comes by slowly, I get tense. My nightmare scenario happened the other night when a woman was leaning against the garbage can on the sidewalk at the exact spot that I always turn around and start walking home. I can't stop right in front of her, make an abrupt turn, and leave. I have to give her a nod and keep walking and try to sneak back around her a different way so she won't think I'm weird.

Weird that some other guys aren't worried running at night. The few times I've done it, I pretty much stayed on high alert the whole time and purposely limited how hard I was going, so I would be ready if something were to happen.

No. Im seeing a lot of responses that running is dangerous for either gender so responding to that. I get that as a woman its different. I also have relatively fast runner privilege in that by the time I am noticed Im gone.

Sure we can, but the likelihood is far less. I've been taking long night walks since I was a teen, never got into anything I couldn't get out of.

Younger men are less likely to be targeted for a number of reasons, but they are obviously not immune to muggings or assaults.

Older men especially are targeted because the opportunity for theft and less chance of fighting back effectively.

It's just simple human psychology and opportunity.

Men tend to be larger, stronger, and more likely to have some kind of combat training or fight experience. Muggers are cowards and opportunists.

Beyond even that... Humans that aren't mentally compromised or acting under the influence of chemicals have mechanisms in the brain that attempt to minimize self-injury, a survival instinct that tells you not to run and start punching a bear or Mike Tyson.
