I don't think it's possible to match the initial shock of the first movie. Everything else is just...meh.

An exorcist sequel won't ever be as scary as the original as long as they keep focusing on the demon and not a nonbeliever mom slowly losing her sanity as science fails her and she feels forced to resort to extreme measures because her child is practically rotting in front of her eyes and nobody else can help. People forget how important the human element is in horror.

The first half is pretty effective at stirring up human drama. Then Ellen Burstyn shows up

As I said in another topic about it, the possessed girls just look like someone ready for a Halloween party. They made me believe the girl could be possessed in the original... this one, I see two girls that look like their job is to jump out at you and go "boo!" at the local haunted house.

I'm not scared by the haunted house actors and I'm not scared or intrigued by anything in the trailer.

it takes a benevolent god from another culture turns that god into a demon then has the christian god be the only thing that can stop it

A god that hasn't been worshipped in at least a thousand years doesn't need you to take up the fight for him. Just enjoy something for once instead of finding faults.

Just to be clear, Pazuzu was not a benevolent god, he was absolutely a demon to the Mesopotamians,. The king of the wind demons in fact and associated w8th plagues.
He was invoked in protecting households because the other demons were scared of him, and in protecting children because he was rivals with the child eating Lammashtu.

The Mesopotamian religion died out ~1500 years ago.

There was a lack of active Mesopotamian exorcists in 1970s Washington for people to turn to.

Do you think Mesopotamian religious propaganda would be a good thing?

But your opinion is simply wrong. The original movie is very questionable whether or not it was actually God that helped. The director was a well known agnostic and he purposely left stuff open-ended.

Also you seriously need to learn some chill because you get upset about everything for some reason or another.

Labeling the Exorcist, a film that was widely despised by most major Christian institutions, as Christian propaganda is just wild to me. It's a complete lack of media literacy.

I remember Friedkin wanted the Catholic Church to condemn the movie as he thought that would make it more notorious and make him more money as a result.

I don't think they ever did officially, though.

I find it really sad when people can't just admit they were wrong. Of course, a large portion of this board is guilty of that.

Friedkin also worked with the church to make sure he got the details right.

The closest the Catholic Church got to condemning it was saying it wasn't suitable for 'a wide audience'.

I never knew the Catholic church was so fatphobic!

But yeah, I think the film absolutely makes the efforts to "get it right" in terms of lithurgy without making that stand in the way of what it wants to achieve as horror entity.
