Potatoes are incredibly versatile, so I'd understand and accept this argument. By pure taste, though, I prefer tomatoes. ...Though I guess there is a forever debate on if tomatoes are vegetables or fruits, so maybe I fully agree with you, after all.

  1. they aren't vegetables
otherwise, yeah they are pretty good. very versatile. However, they are almost always cooked in unhealthy ways -- in oil, or with loads of cream, butter, etc.

i made some homefries last night and they were great. salt, vinegar, ketchup on top. it's crazy how many potatoes you can eat when they are in fries or chips form.

Wait, I understand the debate over tomatoes, but what are potatoes, if not vegetables?

And I'd like an actual, real answer. Not just "Well the WHO doesn't classify them as a vegetable so..." because that isn't an actual answer.

EDIT: Oh, Google tells me the movement against potatoes being a vegetable is purely based on "They're not as nutritional as other vegetables." Fuck that noise.

Botanical classifications are not culinary classifications. You can't say "it's botanically" a vegetable because that doesn't mean anything for culinary purposes. Likewise, if I get a "mixed berry smoothie" I expect it to have zero pumpkin and several non botanical berries like strawberries.

Potato is a starch and when you're preparing a meal it should be treated the same way you'd treat any other starch and if your plate needs vegetables you wouldn't add more potatoes.

Yes, but "Starch" and "Cereal" do not define whether something is a "Vegetable" or not. It does not work that way.

The USDA classifies Corn as a "Vegetable," even though it is more starchy than potatoes, and even though it is a "Cereal."
