finished all the side quests in New Atlantis I could. probably missing some since I haven't talked to everyone yet.

I think I spent like 2 hours just exploring Mars. I found water so I decided to make my first outpost, not knowing if the water was important or not. so far it's just mining lead.

I was hoping I could steal enemy ships but I haven't been able to unlock any yet. the last one I saw I didn't even get a chance to sneak on because Sarah decided to blast everyone. I did just put a point in the lockpicking skill for advanced locks so I think I'll be able to get in some now

as much as i don't like agreeing with game journalists, the many that say "stick with the main storyline for a while" were correct.

i fucked around a lot and wish i didn't.

exploring is fun tho, just more fun when you have better tools at your disposal, which you can get from doing not many story quests.

i got sidetracked by cyberpunk 2.0 but once i finish up with that and phantom liberty i'm gonna jump back into starfield and probably just blitz the rest of the story so i can NG+ and fuck off.

It's a bit different than most Bethesda games. Usually you can just explore and find stuff.

In Starfield it's more like "Do this quest chain and it'll lead you to other quests that are worth doing"

TC I recommend at least starting the Vanguard questline if you haven't do so. It's the best introduction to the universe overall. Even better than the main quest.

water is so abundant >_< I went look up a guide on what was the best to mine and what I was told was the best thing to get was Helium - 3 which there's a moon orbiting Mars(I think its Mars) where I set up shop.

That's the biggest problem with it. I'm still playing it, and I like it, but you pretty much have to google how to do so much basic shit.

I've got about 90 hours of playtime, and I'm still running into stuff that confuses me or makes me go "oh, I didn't know that was a thing".

I spent 12 hours just doing side quests and ended up really hating the game at first because a lot of those inconsequential "Activities" didn't really do anything for me and there wasn't a lot of action to them.

But I'm level 26 now and shit is actually pretty fun.

I do wish it explained more. I barely know how to begin building a ship and that's just because I was randomly clicking in the shipbuilding screen, and I can't even really build a ship because I don't have the skills for it. And my outpost is just sitting there with a full thing of lead and I guess I can't even land at it even though I built a landing pad there.

Yeah, as others have said, do several quests of the Constellation and Vanguard quests as soon as you can. Side quests are tempting to do in Bethesda games, but those two questlines are sort of a tutorial for mechanics and the lore.

everything i'd read in reviews and shit made it seem like an innate feature (or maybe i'm just really selective at reading) but once i finally fucking figured that out it made space battles a bit easier.

stealth is for the weak. To get good, you just need to grab a metal stick and run around enemies in circles and beat the hell out of them with it...

or that's waht I do <_< Apparently they can't hit me if I don't stop moving.

There's a lot of stuff like this. It took me way too long to figure out that I'm not able to just assign more crew with a bigger ship. I need to unlock the skills and unfortunately it's near the end of a skill tree for some reason lol

Thankfully you have a lot of social abilities to choose from. Scavenger and Commerce seem to be the easiest to upgrade and then leadership is literally you running back and forth until you're able to upgrade it again.

Problem is that there's a few skills to choose from before I want crew...because I mean...there's a bit to upgrade and I hate it sometimes, especially later when it takes longer to level up. I want to increase some of my body skills but then that means I miss out on some other skills I want like crew.

Yeah, I had read somewhere that you basically have VATS for your ship. So I restarted the same combat sequence several times and tried to press the button before I looked it up and realized you have to learn the skill.

Same as boost (double jump), crafting better upgrades, and adding more parts to your ship.

Yeah it's tough. In a way it's great for people who want to play this game forever. There's basically always a goal to work towards. But I can't be assed. I want to have that Concealment ability first. I want a better ship. By the time I have got through those I'm probably done with the game lol

yeah I did read that you should do the main quest early on. all the side quests I have now involve jumping to systems I can't get to yet anyway, so right now I'm just exploring the Sol System for the main quest.

I went back to explore Jemison a bit and killed a bunch of dinosaur things.

boost honestly is the biggest bullshit that's not just inherent.

like literally how do they expect you to run around planets without that?

sure you can bump up fitness all you want but still there's no ground vehicles (ffs) so boost is ESSENTIAL. made sure to start the game with that as a perk.

You should be able to travel there. You just need to manually fly to systems that are closer first. It's a weird system.

Yeah it's not like stealth is hard in a bethesda game. But I had maxed out stealth skill (it's easy when you just kill innocent people for an hour in New Atlantis as soon as you get there) and enemies would still catch me in certain missions for seemingly no reason.

not carrying all those resources around saves so much weight

resources suck cuz most of them are much heavier than you expect in the quantity to you tend to find them in. offload them into your crate at the lodge or w/e cuz they'll fuck your ship up quick.

You can add extra storage to your ship, and some habs have storage crates in them. You can also let your crew hold stuff. Capacity seems limited at first, but there are a lot of workarounds.

Yeah, I don't really care for stealth in this game. I hated the Ryuhjin (sp?) questline.

Btw, head to Akila and do the freestar questline that starts with you taking care of a bank robbery. Ends with you getting one of the best ships in the game until you get all the parts and money and can make lol whatever ships later.

Ive played it for 50 hours and I feel like Ive done absolutely nothing, especially with mechanics. Ive barely touched outposts and ship building, and I havent recruited any crew. This is a good thing, but it also leaves me thinking Ill never get the most out of this game. I think Ill come back to this game a lot over the next year

last night I Landed on a random planet for kicks as I was warping to a new star system and I found an abandoned farm overrun with dinosaur aliens and dead scientists scattered around the place. Found some turrets and baited the dinosaurs into their death. Major Jurassic park vibes and I love how I just found this totally randomly and I can just imagine what scenarios happened. Ive found quite a few things like this.

people looking at starfield as a space exploration sim and not an rpg set in space did insane damage to its reputation and reception.

The only useful thing about stealth I've noticed is getting a good first shot in on one enemy before they open fire.

I haven't started Ryujin yet (joined, but haven't done the first real espionage mission), but I'm not looking forward to if sneaking is important.

Sneaking in the Ryujin missions is stupidly easy.

The spoiler block that follows does not contain any actual story content, but does have technical details about the missions.

None of the safes or doors you might need to lockpick for a mission are above Novice level, and there are very few that you actually ever have to pick. 95% of the missions send you to areas that are not restricted, so the only "sneaking" you need to achieve is crouching down next to the object you need to interact with and waiting for the other person in the room to turn around/walk away... and of course you can cheese with a quicksave. And, there are a couple missions that require persuasive dialogue - one of these just gives you the correct dialogue choices anyway so you can't fail, and the other one ... I don't even think the outcome makes a significant difference one way or another.

Neon has a shit ton of sidequests. It feels like there's way more there than New Atlantis, but that might be because New Atlantis is way more difficult to explore.

so far I've just been accepting any quest that could get me money, but now that I've run all over Neon it feels like I've taken quests from about 6 factions all competing with each other and I can't keep track of who is who. I took a job/maybe joined The Strikers and Sarah was like "I don't know why you'd spend time doing this when we have other shit going on" and I had no response besides "exp/me either"

I just have to assume the AI isn't good enough to know I'm betraying everyone, and at some point I get to become evil ruler of the universe if I want to

One of the things you learn quickly is that Sarah is judgemental about everything. If it isn't cheerleading for the UC she isn't interested in it.

By the time I went to Neon I was doing Sam's loyalty quest and he was generally cool with stuff so long as I wasn't going out of my way to kill people. He said something along the lines of the Strikers possibly being the only option available to deal with the Disciples or whatever they were called(the new gang that turns people into torture puppets).

Neon is one of those places were you just have to roll with the layers of vice occurring, maybe curbing a few of the more extreme instances. Play your cards well and you'll end up with a half dozen drug crafting recipes and some shiny new Class C engines available for purchase by the time you finish. Well, that and Ryujin giving you that free skill point for Manipulation.

it unlocks space frog decorations for outposts.

I was really hoping that in my 40+ hours of play I would have encountered another mission like that but haven't found one. Unless I have been unlocking pointless outpost stuff without realizing it since I am too lazy to plan outposts properly and never have enough resources.

Those posters also start to appear at all the cities in the game, regardless of faction. Akila? Posters. Neon? Posters. I wouldn't be surprised if smaller locations like Gagarin or Hopetown have them too.

I put one of them up in the Sleep Crate you can purchase in Neon, since space is at a premium.
