I don't watch Dragon Ball but maybe he could have the same logic as Araki of Jojo? Araki is an animal lover so he showcases just who the worst villains are by having them rip apart animals.

Realistically it is because AT knew we loved Videl and watching her get pummeled made us see how bad the bad guys are?

Most if not all of those other people were capable of defending themselves in some sort of way. They didn't do everything they could to prolong their victims suffering for shits and giggles. Even Spopovich's homie had to tell him to calm his ass down.

That is incorrect, Spopovitch main objective was to find the fighter to drain of his energy. That fighter was Gohan. Therefore Spopovitch couldn't kill Videl, otherwise he would get DQ. He didn't want to get DQ, which is what would happen if he killed anyone.

Videl didn't die thanks to the tournament rules in getting DQ.

Tbh, Videl would have murdered the man of he hadn't been possessed.

I think the portrayal of the scene is the big difference. Only similar one I'd say would be Frieza impaling Krillin. Then again yeah the anime exaggerated the Videl scene quite a bit. Like, Spopovich never tried to pull her back in while she was falling off in the manga

How you figure.

All the people mentioned by TMOG were helpless playthings to the characters who beat them up. Any defending of themselves was done at the mercy of the villain severally holding back being entertained to play with them. Which I'd hardly call that, being capable of defending yourself.

Especially the Freeza and Cell ones he mentioned. Freeze was toying with them until Goku showed up. Cell literally turned entire towns into a buffet....

My memory is fuzzy how Recoom and Nappa went down. But even the androids. Alternate history 17 and 18 killed people for literal shits and giggles.

There comes a point where even someone that once was capable of fighting back is no longer capable of doing so, and both Krillin + Vegeta went through that against Frieza. Krillin was done as soon as Frieza impaled him on his horn, but Frieza prolonged his suffering by bouncing him up and down on his horn until Krillin passed out. Then later Vegeta was pretty much knocked out and limp, but Frieza continue to pummel him (and even started to strangle him at one point), and only stopped because Goku arrived to challenge him.

I don't think any of those others prolonged the suffering of their victims (maybe Recoome did since I remember that fight being pretty brutal as well, but I don't remember for sure), but Frieza certainly did.

It's not even de-aging it's like a completely different character

because it made people take the story and the villains seriously since until that point the buu saga was peaceful and there wasn't a sense of danger

Recoome was actually a highly efficient fighter. He beat Vegeta but wasn't needlessly torturous about it, and with Krillin and Gohan he broke both their necks with a single kick. No messing around. Shame what the FUNimation dub did to him, because his Ocean dub didn't make him sound like a simpleton at all.

Because one had bullets bouncing of him in his very first appearance and the other is barely above Chi-Chi in terms of strength.
And because each and every time Goku has been beaten up, it wasn't watched by a half a dozen people who could have easily put a stop to it within seconds. It was always by an opponent the rest could barely touch.

You're giving examples where the difference in strength between those opponents and those watching them is negligible. Tien was already at Roshi's level, stopping that beating would not have been a matter of Roshi simply grabbing Tien's arm. Same for Goku and Piccolo with Krillin.
