Hamas official says group is open to discussions over truce with Israel

Oct 9 (Reuters) - A senior Hamas official said the group is open to discussions over a possible truce with Israel, having "achieved its targets."

Moussa Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera in a phone interview that Hamas was open to "something of that sort" and "all political dialogues" when asked whether the Islamist group is willing to discuss a possible ceasefire.

Umm... what might those targets be?

We should probably call the side that's killed far more innocents a "terrorist state" first.

Note that I said "first", not "only".

Sure, any group that directed an attack solely against civilians should probably be called a terrorist group.

Yeah, Im pretty sure you cant launch an attack and then cry peace please! Israel might issue a list of demands (hand over the perpetrators) as a condition for accepting any truce.

Hamas is a militant group within Palestine, not the state of Palestine. This doesn't mean that Palestine denounces Hamas here, because they're in one of the shittiest situations possible.

I take instead you mean that Palestine should be declared a terrorist state?

I find the situation confusing. The State of Palestine contains the West Bank and Gaza (probably among others), and the territory is considered Israel-occupied, but doesnt Palestine have its own government? And Hamas has a majority in it?

Not very outlandish given the current treatment of Palestinians and the rhetoric surrounding it. You know they're killing journalists, bombing hospitals, blocking off food and running water, etc., right?

No. That was somewhat the case back in the early 2000s, when there were elections and FATAH was in power.

Then, in 2007, the Palestinian Authority had their last elections. FATAH won in the West Bank and HAMAS won in the Gaza Strip.

Shortly thereafter, HAMAS murdered every single FATAH politician in the Gaza Strip, in a VERY brutal and public manner. Some had ropes tied around their necks and where then thrown off buildings so they strangled to death... and the bodies left to be a warning to the ordinary person.

Following that, HAMAS then declared they would not follow anything the government in Ramallah might pass.

They never declared themselves independent, though. But FATAH hates them with a passion.

The British mandate of Palestine included the west bank of the Jordan river (ie: Israel and the PA) AND the east bank of the Jordan river... ie: Jordan.

And in 1921, Britain gave control the east bank to the Hashemite dynasty (I think it was compensation for their support of Britain during WW1?). Then, in 1946, Jordan declared itself independent... and no longer part of the British mandate.

The first picture in the graphic is for 1917.

But the country of Jordan gave up all claims on Gaza and West Bank (Palestine, as a whole) back when Reagan was on his way out the door.

I don't think his idea that the size of Palestine should also include the whole country of Jordan holds water?

It feels wrong to say, on its face.

I think tankboys comment was referring to the Palestinian refugees in Jordan, which he believes means that counts as Palestinian territory and discredits those maps.

Sounds like some pretty blatant Israel-shilling to me.

They give new lands to be claimed by Israel, it seems.

Like i said in another topic, this most likely will end up with Palestine losing more territory.

If Hamas had just busted through a border wall, attacked an Israeli military base, and taken a tank or w.e. as a trophy then sure

But any chance of peace went out the window when they massacred civilians in the manner they did

I was referring to the fact that Jordan has historically had a large Palestinian population, PRIOR to the refugees. That's why its rulers kept the Palestinians who fled Israel in camps as permanent refugees (they didn't want even more Palestinian citizens tipping their demographics). Jordan was also considered part of Palestine back in the days of the British Mandate. The West Bank is full of Palestinians because they were spread across the Jordan river. Therefore, any map that is trying to show where Palestinians "should" be, must include Jordan. To do otherwise makes their land seem much smaller than it is.

Although, looking closer, I see that the second map has the black area labeled "Arab State", so it really should have zoomed out far enough to show Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc., all colored black.

That's because nothing and I mean NOTHING Israel does is ever considered a terror attack. Every single action they take, whether it be blowing up schools, murdering journalists, blowing up hospitals, building new settlements in areas that belong to Palestinians, stealing their houses, gunning down their children, all of it is considered "self-defense."

I by no means excuse or downplay the terrorism committed by the Israeli government. That doesn't change that they didn't even give it a week or release the hostages before releasing this.

It just makes Hamas seem super unserious, which we all know, about wanting peace.

Neither Hamas nor the Israeli government wants peace. Eternal war suits their needs more.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

People have said something like this after every incident involving Hamas, and yet here we are no closer to any real resolution.

Maybe oppressing and decimating the Palestinian people with indiscriminate destruction isn't the winning tactic for driving Palestinians in the region away from Hamas.

Terrorism will always exist as long as there are people who feel justified in its violence.

The destruction that Israel is going to bring to Gaza will be the most effective recruiting tool for Hamas.
