Always found it weird how the game starts with the empire literally trying to execute you for no reason

Then after the tutorial, the game attempts to display the sides even handedly. Aside from "This is a video game" roleplaying, it feels like no one would side with the guys who were 3 seconds away from murdering them in cold blood for the lulz.

Would be like if Donald Trump tried to shoot you and you still voted for him in 2024.

The Empire needs reform badly, and Tullius should clearly be removed and prosecuted, but the Stormcloaks are rotten to the core and no non-Nord and no Nord with any sense of decency should support them. Just a bunch of deplorables.

They have the Imperials execute you because it gives your character motivation to fight them. Otherwise, the Stormcloaks just don't like anyone who's not a Nord and don't even have good reasons to be killing the people who are trying to stop the Thalmor

I still think it's fascinating how Ulfric is able to become an even more unsympathic asshole than the whole supressing empire that tried to execute you simply because you were somewhere at the wrong time by chance.

In all but one of my playthroughts I joined the empire (if I joined anyone at all) simply for two reasons:

1) I like the city of Solitude
2) Fuck Ulfric.

I did a Stormcloak run once because I like to do a bad guy run in any choose-your-path type games, and I thought "what if the long-awaited dragonborn turned out to be a nationalist piece of shit" would be a fun bit of roleplay.

There is no good guy version of a Stormcloak run, though. As noble as some of the sympathizers are portrayed otherwise, the motives of the faction can only boil down to them being the bad guys.

I just had to look at the jarls on both sides and their replacements to see that the Stormcloaks were worse. Only Sidgeir and Maven are worse than their Stormcloak counterparts, and Dengeir (an overly paranoid elder) and Layla Lawgiver (an incompetent coward) werent that good either.

Gotta say, as mediocre / bad as Bethesda's writing has become overall, it's a feather in their cap that they managed to create a pretty decent morally-gray conundrum that people are still arguing about over a decade later (although the rise of Trumpism has certainly - and rightfully - cast the Stormcloaks in a far more negative light).

Which stands in stark contrast to the game's other big moral dilemma - the only argument that one ever prompts is exactly how hard Delphine can go fuck herself.

I think the Empire was ultimately right.

I only play stormclock as Thalmor, working as a spy to destroy the Empire, and then later Skyrim. I like Ralof and Gerdur, but the Stormcloaks are pretty nasty pieces of work. And I'm not a big fan of Ulfric.

So you like to role play a Thalmor spy who is actively trying to sabotage the Thalmors plans. The Thalmor don't want the civil war to end as prolonging the war will weaken both sides and make it easier for the Thalmor to take the empire and they do not want the Stormcloaks to win the war.

do they? because without the empire, skyrim can get ready for war without the aldmeri dominion spying on Skyrim also it doesn't matter if Skyrim is on the empire or not, the moment the Thalmor attacks Skyrim, the empire is going to attack the thalmor and they will have 2 enemies instead of one

and the whole they need the empire might be a lie by the Aldmeri, they seem to control the empire more they should

If I recall he WAS an asset, wasn't any more. They explicitly want an eternal civil war which very much goes against what Ulfric is wanting. The Empire winning or the Stormcloaks winning? Both are worst case scenarios for the Thalmor.

Thalmor were playing both side and wanted to keep the fight going, but want Imperial expansion while it happened so that neither side would be in shape to fight back once they took over. Winning for Stormcloaks nips that in the bud.
