curious to know how much of CE is film bros

film bro #1 (millennial version):
has a surface level understanding of movies but speaks with authority. loves fight club, boondock saints, leon, v for vendetta, the dark knight/nolan, denis villeneuve, american psycho, ryan gosling movies, tarantino (except they havent seen jackie brown), martin scorsese but only his mob movies and the wolf of wall street (thinks jordan belfort is aspirational), all his fav movies are on the imdb or letterboxd top 250

film bro #2 (zoomer version)
probably used to be a film bro #1, now watches foreign or b&w movies on a somewhat regular basis, doesn't generally like movies that cost $150m to produce, also anyone who unironically uses this term is probably a racist/xenophobe who hates art

do either of these describe you???

I used to be both of those to varying extents, but now that I've gotten older I've started to find an appreciation for bad horror movies and/or just super fucking weird movies, so idk where that would fall under.

lol I actually do like the Tarantino movies I've seen and have not seen Jackie Brown. But I also haven't seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, either.

But I don't qualify for Film Bro #1 status because I was nonplussed by Boondock Saints and American Psycho, the only Ryan Gosling movie I like is Blade Runner 2049, I don't like mob movies and I don't care for DiCaprio movies either, which means no interest in Wolf of Wall Street.

While #1 does list many of the movies that I love, I certainly don't speak eith authority about movies and don't look up to Jordan Belfort. But I also watch and love many lesser known films and some just straight up weird shit like Welcome to Woop Woop, Tusk and Lo.

no

That said in the past couple years I have gotten really into movies (compared to how I used to be, for years I watched maybe 10 a year if you're lucky, since 2021 I have watched over 80 a year), and besides well known established films have found myself really endeared by absolute shlock. Probably more notably I've come to absolutely adore movies with little to no CGI in them and do all their crazy stuff practically.

he's like nolan. characters don't feel human. very serious. thuddingly obvious. droning loud as fuck hans zimmer scores. it builds a sense of self importance/gravitas which i think is why film bros are attracted to it. same with nolan. personally i just find it all very boring. except enemy. that movie is good.

I could see that in some of his films. Particularly Dune and Prisoners. But I find that his characters are very human in Blade Runner, Arrival (well, Amy Adams mostly) and Incendies.

incendies is seriously one of the worst pieces of shit i've seen in several years. miserablism for the sake of miserablism. terrible! i hate it! dune also has no positive traits fwiw. blade runner i actually think is pretty good until harrison ford shows up and then it becomes an uninteresting action movie that is barely even about ryan gosling any more. arrival worked well for me as a procedural about understanding aliens but any time it tried to make me care about amy adams or jeremy renner i suffered from severe levels of zone out.

Dune was second worst big 2021 film I saw. I actually have a general fondness of most movies associated with filmbro #1, but I dont consider those movies significantly more worthy of respect than numerous other films in general.
I was into watching foreign films when I was younger because I thought it was what was hip. Ill still watch a foreign film if it interests me, but Im not actively seeking them out anymore.

A lot of critics basically promote films generally liked by filmbro #1. While anti-film bros exist and draw on criticism of tropes and points of view against films popular with filmbro #1, anti-film bros are a smaller group with their own canon of films and filmmakers. Films appealing to filmbro #1 are often easily likable (at least to certain demographics), and thus popular casual film viewers.
