I think it's one of those things that started because of the Chappelle Show.

I remember that trading places skit, where a white husband went to a black family, and a black husband went to a white family.

I'm white and my while family uses them. Doesn't seem to be a thing in Brazil though. Last time we went to visit my wife's family I didn't bring enough and couldn't find any in stores. Those bath loofah things are pretty common though.

I just use a bath sponge puff for all the parts I can reach and a washcloth for parts I can't. Puffs are game changers.

This brings up another thing that always struck me as odd - using a towel more than once. I've met several people who hang up their towels to dry, and use them for multiple showers before washing them. My family was always one use, then down to the laundry.

The only reason to use a washcloth or anything beyond hands is to exfoliate. If your skin doesn't need exfoliated, and most people's don't, there's no need to use anything beyond the bar itself and lathered hands.
