A black bisexual cisgender woman in New York City says she was assaulted by a cashier in a convenience store who mistakenly thought she was transgender and sprayed mace at her, dragged her out by the hair, and kicked her in the head.

Jasmine Adams, 35, filed suit Monday against the West Brighton Deli Grocery & Grill, located in the borough of Staten Island, the New York Daily News reports. The suit was filed in Staten Island Supreme Court.

Transphobia is a blight on society that hurts everyone, including cis people. Always call out transphobia when you encounter it and fight back!

It's not an acronym that stands for anything, it's a prefix originating from Latin that means "on this side", as opposed to "trans" (meaning "on the opposite side of"; see "cisalpine" vs. "transalpine" or "transatlantic" vs. "cisatlantic" as examples).

Thus, "cisgender" (commonly shortened as "cis") means that you identify with the gender identity that you were assigned at birth, contrasting with "transgender" (which means that you don't identify as the gender you were assigned; commonly shortened as "trans").

She was on the phone with her friend and talking about the legal Marijuana she was looking to buy. They were talking about different products and prices and suddenly the clerk attacked her. I heard the victim believes what started it was him misunderstanding what she was saying on the phone about prices, and thinking she was trying to haggle the price with the clerk. Then he somehow got into his head that she was trans. She tried to defend herself by grabbing something and swinging it at him. Then he grabbed her and dragged her out by the hair and kicked her as she laid on the sidewalk

I saw some video of the last part where she gets dragged. Didn't see inside the store but that's from victim's claims

Oh and the attacker is free still. Cops don't even know his name or where he is. The store fired him but refuse to reveal his name. And for some reason, the cops didn't retaliate against the store for this. The store should be shut down and the owner arrested

Disappointing. Why are people so inclined to violence? Even if you, for whatever reason, dislike trans people, why do you feel its okay to physically harm them? What is wrong with people?

Well when a big chunk of media and polticians are constantly lying that trans people are dangerous pedophiles, it actually seeps into the public consciousness.

It has less to do with that and more the fact of trans people being targets. Trans people suffer over 4x more violent victimization, sexual assault, etc and even this is widely known to be underreported (the true figures are higher but we cant say exactly how much.) Many trans people dont trust the police, and with good reason.

In Jamaica, a popular US tourist destination, trans people can be openly murdered and the government wont do anything about it because of the culture there. Its basically off limits if youre trans. This is not to mention the numerous dozens of countries where they have laws that make it illegal to even exist or you can be put to death.

So its a combination of a lot of factors that allow people to get away with this kind of stuff, and/or feel justified in how they treat us.

I don't know what I've heard more of, trans people being attacked because they are trans or cis people being attacked because someone thinks they are trans.

My sister-in-law had a very rude encounter with a stranger in a bathroom because she thought she was trans. Apparently getting super upset saying things like "you people shouldn't be in here" before walking out.

I'm curious what the guy looks like. I have a picture in my head and wonder if it matches

Understood, but I still dont grasp what drives people to such grotesque violence in the first place. I guess I just dont quite understand what justifies physical violence against people you dislike. I could rattle off people (generally individuals, not groups) that I dont like for whatever reason, but that wouldnt make it acceptable to cause them harm.

Republicans have spent decades conditioning their voters that any group they classify as "other" is beneath them and worthy of scorn, ridicule, and mistreatment simply for being who they are.

This. By calling Trans people groomers and pedophiles, you can justify any violence against us as "well, are you seriously going to defend pedophiles?"

Again I point to Project 25, which would classify all trans people as pedophiles and would make pedophilia punishable by death.
