He never said that

To be fair, he said something very close to that. He was talking about his work in congress and it was just a poorly phrased answer:

I'll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be. But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

Gore's actual words, however, were widely reaffirmed by notable Internet pioneers, such as Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, who stated, "No one in public life has been more intellectually engaged in helping to create the climate for a thriving Internet than the Vice President."

In a speech to the American Political Science Association, former Republican Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Newt Gingrich also stated: "In all fairness, it's something Gore had worked on a long time. Gore is not the Father of the Internet, but in all fairness, Gore is the person who, in the Congress, most systematically worked to make sure that we got to an Internet, and the truth isand I worked with him starting in 1978 when I got [to Congress], we were both part of a "futures group"the fact is, in the Clinton administration, the world we had talked about in the '80s began to actually happen."

He never said I invented the internet and if you dont misconstrue his words it was obvious what he meant, and what he said was true

What is the point of this reply? I posted exactly what he said and two quotes from people detailing exactly what he meant. Did you think I misunderstood something? I also never stated he said "I invented the internet". Just that it and "I took the initiative in creating the internet" are similar phrases which is how it became such a meme in the first place.

He himself joked about it years later:
Gore, himself, would later poke fun at the controversy. In 2000, while on the Late Show with David Letterman he read Letterman's Top 10 List (which for this show was called, "Top Ten Rejected Gore Lieberman Campaign Slogans") to the audience. Number nine on the list was: "Remember, America, I gave you the Internet, and I can take it away!"

It's really not that poorly worded though. In the context of the speech, it's very clear that he's talking about early initiatives to create what would later become the internet. And that he's not taking credit for "inventing" it, just for being one of the people in congress who saw its potential and supported it early on. Which was true. And everyone listening at the time understood this.

But then it got taken out of context and changed into something very different.

Meanwhile, the actual people that invented the internet all pretty uniformly agree that Gore did play an utterly critical role in the early development of the internet on the government side of things and that he was the first major elected official to understand the transformative effect it could have on daily life.
