I have YouTube Premium but I support people who find a way to block ads. They are waaay over the top. Especially given that clickbait titles and thumbnails, hidden dislike counts, and a completely useless search function make it hard to know if the video you're waiting to see is even what you want.

I use Premium because I got used to the benefits when I did the free trial. I don't really watch Youtube on the computer so adblockers are a moot point. Yes, I know about vanced, etc. and have used it but Premium has features which isn't offered that I use everyday - namely no ads when casting to a tv, and the ability to download videos for offline viewing.

How quaint.

Fuck youtube and its cancerous ad practices.

Double that when they demonetize a creator and STILL run multiple ads on their videos.

Anyone who pays for premium is part of the problem.

Ill just copy/paste what I commented on previously.

I only use YouTube at work and our work computers dont have Adblocks and I dont have administrator rights to do it. Only our IT department can do that.

With that being said I only use YouTube a couple times a month while eating my evening meal at work. Ill watch a movie or a game trailer and thats about it. I watch 5 seconds of a video and then skip it.

Its not a major issue to me.

If things became annoyingly problematic I can just stop using it the little I do.

If I had to give up YouTube completely it wouldnt bother me. Im old and Im not enamored with the Internet and constant connection to it that some people are. Ive never even owned a cellphone in my life. The whole Internet could go away and other than gamefaqs and checking out some sports scores it wouldnt impact me much.

ok

I'll continue to enjoy no ads without having to play the 'try to get around aggressive anti-adblock systems' game.

Keep paying Google to make their ad practices worse. Wait until premium has tiers.

I'm sure they will ad in a "member since" badge to make you feel special.

If anyone is making it worse it is the freeloaders. Google has to spend money on illegitimate people and measure elasticities on people who can afford premium

I understand they need to generate revenue and they need more revenue as costs grow. But I don't know about calling ad blocking "freeloading," especially when fundamentally all ad blocking is doing is preventing your computer from connecting to certain servers. Freeloading would be more like getting things for free, receiving extra profit from the coverage, and paying in something intangible and immeasurable like "exposure" without paying a cent for hosting haha jk...unless?

It's a complicated issue. I fully support blocking ads, for any reason, but I know ads are needed to pay for the service. I'd think there'd be enough people who don't block ads or pay for premium but maybe not, or maybe Google feels they have a right to more revenue. Maybe they're hoping this convinces a few people to pay up or just deal with the ads, maybe it's the start of more drastic measures, who knows. But I would never consider ad blocking controversial.

If this is really about freeloading then Google needs to start charging a flat fee for video uploads or a flexible fee for YouTubers that meet a certain criteria. After all, why should Google be expected to host their videos, which pull in millions of server stressing views, for free while they're pulling in thousands if not millions from sponsors, merch, etc.? Why put all the burden on the common viewer? They might even be able to eliminate ads entirely.

I'm being only half serious btw. It's just funny how this sort of compromise, while sounding perfectly reasonable when framed as a matter of freeloading in regards to file hosting, is not considered.

  1. You can support content creators without having to watch sevral ads a video. Patreon, sponsership, etc.
  2. Sounds like an easy way to solve that problem is to stop paying for it.

Subscribe to their Patreon. You'll be helping them far more than you are via YouTube ads/Premium.

2. i pay for premium and am probably charged more because of the free loaders

Well then, you can expect the charges to fall now they are cracking down on adblockers.

Any minute now.

Right?

Corporate shills have weirdly convinced themselves that they're part of the owner class. Coupled with a little trickledown propaganda since they think the platform gives a single fuck about its content creators and that making the platform richer will help them too.
