They say most of us will experience an assault within our career. So it finally happened.

Try to keep it short here but I'll explain more if people ask. Dude was high as fuck I asked him to get up out of his bed that he was going up front (liability. If they are high we send up front to be monitored more closely in case of a over dose) he fell out of his bed and started flailing. Eventually he did what seemed to be a deliberate kick and hit me in the shin. So I sprayed him. He jumped and punched me. Partner sprayed him but I got caught in the cross fire. Despite that I took him to the ground and we got him cuffed up.

Honestly the pepper spray wasn't seemingly phasing him. Mybpartner just used a big can which unloads a lot. Made the floor slippery and I used that to my advantage to take him off his feet.

Got a lot of what I coulda shoulda done but I'm sorry I actually felt little threat from dude due to how fucked up he was. I wasn't about to use excessive force just cause he hit me. I got the job done without all that.

I actually took more damage from my partner spraying him cause I got hit too. I forgive her though cause as said it made the floor slippery which made it all too easy to take him off his feet.

Theyre a guard, either in a prison or some kind of mental health ward.

Im going to guess youre in a remand facility? Where people who have been arrested but not gone before a judge (for bail) yet. Thats where youll find people who were only arrested a few hours ago and could still be under the influence of whatever drugs they use.

People with probably no security or physical confrontation training sure do like having an opinion on the matter of conflict resolution.

Get back to me when TC shoots someone while they are complying, then we can talk about excessive force.

I'm glad that when I was working at a mental facility that building had its own white staff to deal with unruly patients. The only time that I had to deal with something similar it took 4 people to restrain a hospital patient. They gain some ridiculous strength when they get angry.

My sister is an RN, and works behavioral health at a large urban hospital, and it isnt uncommon for her to be attacked by patients.

The worst I got was slapped in the face and another guy chased me with a knife >_> Another guy tried to punch but I grabbed his wrist. I'm kinda lucky I haven't encountered worse (yet...).

Yeah. These people get gorilla strength when high on some of this shit. My blessing was he was too high to fight effectively. He had more raw strength than me just couldn't use it effectively.

Pepper spray was the least violent appropriate response to that.

It usually stops them in their tracks what we carry is hot as hell. Dude was high didn't phase him much. But with my partner using the big can it made the floor slippery. With that it made it easy to sweep dude off his feet.

Trust me normally the spray is effective. I caught some or it and fortunately only one eye. Cause I couldn't open that eye for shit.

Idk if dude himself could see after that but I had my hands on him so he knew where I was .

They had kicked me multiple times I just initially took it as them being high and flailing. The one where I ended up spraying him just was the point where I was like ok he's kicking me deliberately.

Fighting people high on this shit they smoke ain't fun. I've done it before just first time one has swung on me. Before it was just basically a wrestling match. The last time it took 5 of us to put him in cuffs. And as said he didn't swing on me he was just resisting.

And honestly without our tools like oc spray we fight with our hands tied so to speak.

On the street as soon As he hit me in the face I would have responded in kind with a fist of my own. Can't do that though. I mean if I felt threatened enough I could justify it but the paperwork afterwords would be a nightmare.

Yeah, the one time I had to deal with a patient who was on drugs he was strapped to the fucking bed and it still took 6 of us to hold him down. Drugged strength is unreal.

I'm not positive but I think mace and oc spray are different. Same intended effect.

Don't try to get me to spell it but OC is just short for a type of pepper. It's related to cayenne pepper or however it's spelled. Then it has oil added to make it stick to the skin.

Stuff is actually safe for consumption known people to spray it in their food and eat it

Spraying people generally leads to the best possible resolution. They're temporarily fucked up without lasting effects. I wish more law enforcement was liberal with it instead of other means. It'll put down most people unless they're immune or super duper high.

No I pulled it after he kicked me

I believed in the moment he was just flailing his legs cause he was tweeking. Once a kick landed that clearly seemed deliberate I pulled it.

Punched me in the chin but I bobbed my head back quick enough it was mostly a glance. I felt it but it didnt have enough power to even knock my head back.

You'd think, but some people who are drugged out are surprisingly immune to the stuff.

Yeah I hate all these people (not here so far) that said I shoulda done this that or thr other cause I woulda been justified. All things that could have led to injuries. Such as slamming his face into the wall.

I will do those things if I feel like my life really is in jeporday but honestly with how fucked up he was I really didn't feel threatened at all cause I had faith back up was coming all I had to do was hold him off till them. And I've done that before with bigger and equally high inmates. Just never got punched before lol typically they just resist being cuffed like a mother fucker and try slinging you around

Seems fair. Attacking once doesn't mean they'll suddenly stop and not attack again, and pepper spray is non-lethal, so... I'm not sure of the problem? It's not like they shot the guy. We should be applauding when police/guards/etc. de-escalate a situation correctly. Yes, it's sad we're at that point, but... That's life, currently.

This. I have yet to get physically accosted in the food service industry. The most Ive had to deal with were rude guests wanting to speak to the manager, and even then I was just a third party witnessing the event since I typically work in the back of the house washing dishes and keeping the place clean.

I feel like these posts (and what was quoted) are kinda pointless, since it was pretty clear the TC meant in their line of work, since they said "most of us" and then went on to talk about a specific situation, indicating they clearly meant a specific profession.

Yeah there is a statistc somewhere that pretty much boils down to most correctional officers will be assaulted at least once in their career.

Sad part is you can be the nicest CO in the world to the inmates and it can still happen. Just boils down in that case of it you are potentially gonna be in the way of what they want.

That night kinda proved it can happen to anyone. I always thought I'd get assaulted cause I take the job seriously. Nope dude was high and I was told to go detain him. Never had a interaction with dude before. Didn't even know him. And he was a crip to boot I've never had issues with the crips. Well had one that would get mouthy with me now and again but he'd always back down and say I'll do it just cause it's you. Aka he had some respect for me. He just wasn't used to officers standing up to him cause he was the head honcho of the crips on this unit. If other officers did their job with him they where either a ass or underhanded.

For example I'd talk to him first everytime and tell him what I needed him to do to correct a rule violation. Where as another officer just confiscated his shit while he was asleep (well within their right I'll add. If they don't have it in their locker we are allowed to just take it) but nah I'd wake him up and tell him put his shit away or lose it.

I can be a ass but they gotta push me there. Literally seen inmates tell other inmates that "yall the ones MAKING him do his job" yeah cause if I come down on one I start coming down on everyone cause they preach being consistent.

Had to laugh my Sgt who was my backup in the fight told me today "gotta give it to you. You never gave up trying to put him in cuffs" like what was I supposed to say fuck this get up and walk away? The inmates always always paying attention and they talk. I'd never live that down and they'd start bucking up to me on a regular basis had I gave up.
