Not a single post blamed TC.

Every post states what one shouldnt do as a precaution.

The cries of victim blaming is so stupid because it implies people arent putting all or majority of the blame on the one committing the crime. Which is a very lazy way to think of comments.

This exact thing happened to me OP, it really sucked. I'll say a few things

1. A lot of people (well-meaning friends, bitter posters on this board, etc) will give you "why would you do that" or "that's what you get for being a hoe" type advice. Fuck those people, most sincerely. They're not looking out for you, they're just projecting. As if you aren't already thinking now about how to be more precautious, ffs.
2. I just told my friends and family (well, the family I could tell) what happened and then asked them to block the guy or ignore it. Nothing came of it. That move alone made me feel a lot better because it meant if they did try and blackmail me further, i had already prepared my family for the worst.
3. I never responded. It seemed to work. They're looking to escalate or wind you up, I just gave them nothing and they clearly moved onto the next target.

Horrible feeling. I guess I eventually just reasoned that hey, I have a penis and people might see it, I'm fortunate enough to be male and nobody actually gives a fuck about my nudes.

The main takeaway was how real these scams can seem. In my case they had clearly hired some cam model to take pics in whatever poses I asked for (at one point i asked for a pic holding up 3 fingers, and i almost instantly got one). So I'm now extra vigilant.

But I would suppose it depends on your definition of victim blaming. If someone gets their car broken into and I discover its because their doors were unlocked

Is it victim blaming to point out that is wasnt smart to not lock their doors? At no point am I saying the victim is solely or even largely responsible. The crime committer is. Obviously.

Same situation here. Tc showed the ability to realize people probably ask for face pics for safety. I took post 9 as a Look dont do this, its not smart.

Feeld. Which I'll say to address some of the "what % of girls out there are actually asking" or w/e, I've personally found that Feeld has leaned a little more towards the "We've had a nice chat, do you want to meet up tonight but also I want to see what I'm getting ;) " side of things than traditional apps like Tinder/Bumble.

I try to keep the two sides silo'd though. I use a different set of pictures for my more "hookup" sites/apps/whatever with a different name and less information to connect to me, whereas I'm more willing to share information about myself on apps where I'm actually looking to go on real dates with people and stuff. The only thing that really connects to me is my phone number which up until now I didn't feel too concerned about giving that out before meeting up because a phone call when you get somewhere doesn't feel unreasonable. Really I just had the wrong threat model in mind, I was prepared for like...someone shows up and tries to rob me type scenarios or someone arranges a meet up and then is like "oh silly me I don't have money for gas could you send me some".

I'm not sure, but upon more reflection I think that they just reverse searched my phone number and used my name to find my account (I have a fairly unique name).

This used to be a common thing where they would just send emails to people and said "I know your password is [password leaked in some database breach]" but at some point they got lazy and started just being like yeah trust me I have the pics.

Thanks to the people who are being supportive. I obviously understand that there were stupid actions on my part and generally I honestly don't care that much about if a person I know sees a nude pic of me or something, but there was something so aggressive about the messages and the blackmail that it was really shocking/violating feeling. There have been some things going on in my life that opened me up to be more susceptible and "trusting" over the weekend. So far they haven't seemed to have done anything.

I personally don't care if pics of my Anaconda are sent to all my family and friends, they'd either be jelly or impressed :P

i had something similar happen but it was through email. someone saying they had nude pics of me and threatened to show all my family and friends unless i paid them. i just blocked them. it freaked me out at first cause it did have my old password on it that i recognized but it was from the myspace days and found out myspace was part of a data leak. so it was just someone that got that list and just mass emailed all the accounts hoping for easy money. nothing ever came of it. does make me wonder just how much money they did get tho.

plus in that situation your best bet is just to block them. even if you pay them what's stopping them from coming back like a month later and asking for more? they can promise to delete the pics but they wouldn't. they'd just keep extorting you for money.

yeah i don't think 98% of scammers actually go through with it because it wastes time for them, they just hope it'll scare people into paying up but it is definitely a very scary experience

Wow, what a scam. It's like old bluff where they pretend to have your nudes... but really. Awful.
