I take my foot off the gas just before reaching the crest of the hill, let gravity speed me back up and past my original speed, then inertia back to my original speed before putting my foot back on the gas.

Assuming noone in front of me, nor speed trap cops lying in wait, to foil my plans.

Does that count?

I've done it while also slowing down for a turn, in various vehicles.

What you don't do is trying doing it descending a big hill or a mountain. Most runaway ramps are for people's whose brakes have burned out.

If your going 60 down a high grade climb, a lot of people died because the car is going too fast to allow the clutch to re-engage. Then people start going too fast and burn out the brakes and die.

oh OK I mean that makes sense. so for safety probably not a good idea rolling downhill just to save some non zero amount of gas. thank you

In a lot or maybe most states it's illegal to coast in neutral. If your car stalls then your power brake and power steering will cut out. If you're in gear then you keep those if it shuts off.

I don't think it saves on gas, either.

Not it's pretty fucking unsafe. Imagine slaming your car into drive going downhill at 45 mph at idling RPMs cause you gotta...you know...drive.

In a manual, it's whatever. Autos weren't really designed to do that. They can do it for emergency purposes

If you're just going down a driveway or something, that's fine. But you don't save any mpg by just coasting

well I would never take her into neutral going downhill at 60 but there are a lot of hills to and from work so I've been looking at ways to save gas

this was a silly idea but I'm glad some cemen are nice enough to actually help me figure out if it's a good idea

things online generally just say its not saving me that much, and the unsafety makes it not worth it but I'm not taking her 60mph downhill it's 25 zones with tons of braking

but message received, won't be doing that again

I tried to do it in a modern manual and I was sad to learn it didn't do jack squat. Had to get it jumped

You more save gas by car, not by actions. Like, trucks commonly hypermile to get 1-2 MPG better than the average while my Volt is over 6000 MPG: the actions of the driver really mean nothing compared to the shift in the car.

You want better MPG, drive like a not-maniac/get a new car.
