Mods can post in closed topics even after they lock at 500, but otherwise it's still possible if two or more people get a same time post at 500.

Uh, no? Because sometimes it's a great thing when stupid out themselves for saying stupid shit. A guy over on the RE4 remake board made a thread saying the remake sucked, the thread hit 500 because he kept spouting the same shit, and trying to shutdown anyone who disagrees with his clearly stupid and biased opinion lol He made a part 2 that was quickly buried

Honestly, I agree with that. It never really made that much sense in the first place (slow connections wouldn't matter, as it could still be limited to 50 posts per page). I'd be all for them getting rid of that.

It would mean they need to add code for special handling when there's a really high number of pages (like on some forums how if there's, say, 100 pages and you're on page 37, the page selector would display something like 1 2 3 ... 36 37 38 ... 98 99 100, instead of literally listing every page), but that would be relatively trivial to do.

It's the kind of change that would improve the boards without chipping away at the soul of the site, much like adding underline and spoiler tags.

I unironically agree with this. 500 topics and reaching that number are a staple of GameFAQs culture, especially not with the userbase dwindling and it being harder to achieve.

I propose we make it still significant by giving 500 topics a special icon and making the 500th post all shiny and colorful. Maybe even add a badge for having a topic reach 500.

I imagine the reasoning at one point was that the only topics to ever reach the limit were controversial or stupid (or both) and the hope was that after the topic was auto locked the discussion would be over. Even if that were the case the sentiment has obviously changed or was forgotten, but the limit still remains.

I'm not against this logic either. I'm perfectly ambivalent to the idea one way another. Post limits could go I don't really care. Board culture is fun so maybe just leave it.
