Very and yes they did, pretty much. There were metal-esque band before, but Sabbath really shaped the sound of what metal would become.

They are considered the grandfathers of metal and maybe not so much these days, however in the 80s and 90s pretty much every metal band credited them as an influence.

I'm gonna catch a lot of flak for this, however I like Dio with Sabbath far more than Ozzy with Sabbath. I don't deny Ozzy Sabbath has fundamental songs to the genre and all that, the dude's vocals and role are just uninspiring to me. Tony Iommi gives some insight on this, "Ozzy sang with the song, Dio sang through the song"

Also, go fuck yourself for rhyming "masses" with "masses", Ozzy lol
