Bastion is pretty good, though having played Transistor first just makes me compare Bastion unfavorably to it.

Love world of goo. It plays great on phone.

Loved Skullgirls for the story. But then the game is designed for online multiplayer and that's basically unplayable if you are not a fighting game geek because you will get absolutely humilliated in every match. Weird that they made such a story heavy game but designed it for competitive fighting, I wonder if a casual Skullgirls would work.

I played a shitton of Angry Birds at college and I always thought the gaming community was weirdly hateful of it. It's a good game! Back when this kind of mobile game was still fun.

Also played a shitton of Plague Inc. But I can't imagine playing it post-covid yeah.

On Deltarune, I played chapter 1, didn't have strong feelings for it. Then ch 2 came out and I decided to wait until the whole game is done because I'd already forgotten what happened in ch 1 and I know I'd have to start over, so I don't want to start over a third time.

Now to be fair, when ch 1 first came out in 2018, the author predicted 7 years to finish the whole game, so we are still on schedule.

Cook, Serve, Delicious is great. I've only played the 2nd one so far, but it has a mode where you don't set the menus, so you get to experience a variety of what the game offers instead of doing the strategy of the first game where you just rotate steak and chicken

109. Superliminal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SX8XMwMw6Y

You're not Portal. You want so badly to be Portal, but you'll never be Portal. I dig the basic concept of using perspective to manipulate size, even if it does get a little repetitive lifting up an object and dropping it repeatedly to make it a different size. The game is fun even if it doesn't quite hold up to others in the physics-bending tongue-in-chief science lab genre.

108. Telling Lies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da63CPUkmRI

Telling Lies is the followup to Her Story, with a much more amibitious story piecing together live action video of several different characters. Like with Her Story, you only start with a limited selection of clips, but you can search for different clips using topics you overheard in previous clips, requiring you to pay close attention to the information you've learned. I don't think it hits quite the same way Her Story did though, with the more ambitious story making you feel a little less connected to its characters. Everything is ultimately tied around David, a man who has some sort of relationship with the other 3 women, but it also goes into some things regarding ecoterrorism that, while very interesting, get a little bit muddled.

107. The Beginners Guide
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBK5Jheu0To

Imagine if The Stanley Parable was trying to make you cry instead of laugh. That's The Beginner's Guide, and it is 100% successful at that goal, for better or worse. It's interesting because it very closely walks that line between the first-person puzzle game genre and being a straight art game. Worth a try if you like art games, but might not have the deeply satisfying gameplay you're looking for otherwise.

106. The Witness
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul7kNFD6noU

I have some mixed feelings on The Witness. At it's best, The Witness is a beatiful and sometimes genius puzzle game, where the entire world around you is itself a puzzle to be worked out. What seems like a fairly simple concept at first is soon revealed to be drastically more complex. There a very vague sense of lore to the environment around you, but it's pretty minimal and the game never pretends like the puzzles themselves aren't the main driving factor. Which, the puzzles are very creative and impressive, but sometimes it does get a little tiring just doing puzzle after puzzle without much to compel you further. Which sounds like a dumb criticism of a puzzle game, but it is part of what stops me from placing it higher.

105. Quadrilateral Cowboy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_IVvhSX2tY

What a weird fucking game. It's primarily a heist game, and the heists are navigated using a portable computer and hacking into cameras/alarms/etc. Think Watch Dogs, only much lower tech, with a bizarre absurdist story that's often hard to make any real sense out of, and characters that look like... what were those toys, in like the late 90s/early 2000s, where they were like action figures but made up of square and rectangular body parts that could be unattached and reattached together? Anyone remember what they were called? Anyway, they look like that. Weird game.

104. Bit.Trip Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HI60A2oNmo

There are so many of these endless runnner games, but few get it as right as Runner2, which really nails that challenge of combining memorable style and visual pizzaz with easily graspable platforming concepts that are easy to learn but very difficult to do perfectly. Like most endless runners, it's very frustrating at times, but it lets you quickly launch back into your next run and keeps you addicted to trying to do everything right. And when you do, it's very satisfying.

104. Maquette
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AGQQF_VQeo

More than a few of these games are going to be ones I played because they were free on PS+. Maquette is in theory very similar to Superliminal, manipulating objects to change their size in reality, but in this case it's done not through POV, but in moving objects between the world around you and a tiny version of the world in the middle. Drop a penny in the model, a giant one appears in the world, pick up a tower from the model and it disappears from the world, etc. But what draws me in here is that there is motivation in what you're doing as you piece together scenes from a past relationship, with much of the world symbolically representing it.

103. VVVVVV
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnLdDTLnjm0

oh shit i'm sorry

Veni Vidi Vici is probably a evil masterpiece of mind-bogglingly difficult platforming (that I fully admit I never beat). I think what sells it for me is the the 8-screen drop you have to fall through as you approach it. It is the developer directly saying to the player, "haha fuck you" before dropping you into the hardest freefall and immediate reverse freefall it could come up with, all for a single collectible.

102. Shank
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n_XkjD52M4

Shank is the visual style of Mark of the Ninja, but instead of grim stealth, it's a violent retelling of the movie Machete (I looked it up, and Shank came out exactly 10 days before Machete did). The gameplay gets a little repetitive at times, but it's never boring, and is possibly the closest we've ever gotten to a playable Robert Rodriguez story (if there are better examples I'd be happy to hear them!)

101. Baba Is You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3_yA4HTJfs

JON
BOB
IS
DU
MB

Baba Is You's ranking is limited only by my own personal ability to play it. Because whileI think Baba Is You is legitimately in consideration for the most ingenius puzzle game ever created, I am way, way too stupid for it. I was riding high, solving puzzles left and right, only for it to turn out that I had barely scratched the surface in terms of what this game expects of you. I mean, holy shit. The whole point of the game is that the rules of the game are able to be changed by you if you're smart enough, and I don't want to spoil the extent of what that means because they hold to that idea without end.

99. Later Alligator
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbmKuBrDhow

I really want to see more indie games like this. It strikes me as something that is almost impossible to dislike. It's fun, it's funny, it's silly and stylistic. I'm honestly surprised the game didn't take off more than it actually did, it seems like the kind of thing I would've expected to get big on Tiktok or something for being so wholesome. The gameplay doesn't change the game or anything but it is definitely a fun way to spend a day.

98. Pentiment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfYryKWkNfw

I've had trouble pinpointing exactly how I feel about Pentiment. At first, I dug the art style, but thought the gameplay, which basically consists of running back and forth across the town, felt kind of monotonous. And, I mean, it kind of is, but the story draws you in enough to barely notice as it goes. The biggest mechanic you're fighting is time, where you have to solve a murder mystery but you don't have enough time to explore all the potential clues. You have to accuse someone despite it being impossible to have all the facts, and there are real consequences of your actions. And the style of using different classical fonts to show the social status of the characters speaking is such a fantastic design choice.

97. Toem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh0kQM0e6Oo

Think Pokemon Snap if it was a point-and-click adventure game. It's addicting just taking pictures of everything you see, and the game is packed full of reasons to do so. There are puzzles to solve, sure, but the biggest draw is just navigating the different environments and seeing what all they have to offer. There are animals to seek out and photograph, and many characters have special photos you can take of them under the right circumstances.

Baba is definitely still the best puzzle game. I spent about 50 hours on it and I feel like 100% would've taken me 50 more. I did look up some hints too cuz I find no shame in that.

Void Stranger is the next best puzzle game imo. Also very long and very rewarding, but WAY more bite size. Puzzles are like 1-10 minutes, hardest ones are like 30 min.

Braid, Portal 1/2, and the Puyo Puyo games are the best puzzles games.

Baba Is You is very cool as a premise and a game to mess around with. I just got stuck early...wish it had a smoother rise in difficulty so I could have stuck with it longer. I don't think it's guilty of a difficulty jump like Steven's Sausage Rolls, but I can only look up so many hints that early in a puzzle game before I need to dip.

Of this list, I beat the Witness and Superliminal. Both were fun. Downloaded the Looker but ended up deleting it before finishing. Also played World of Goo for a few minutes on Wii. I guess I don't play many indie games, but I'll look out for other ones on this list.

I agree there should be a line between the types. I'm not sure Braid falls into the soft side though...maybe? I think its puzzles are uniquely difficult enough and the game goes deep enough with its mechanics to be on the hard side, but it's pretty short with intended speedrunning in it too. I can see the argument, but I'd place it at least as harder than Portal/Puyo Puyo if we do like a scale of things.

The hardest puzzle game that I like very much is The Witness, and I would put that in the harder side alongside Baba and ole' sausage rolls.

Braid felt harder than actuality because it was one of the first puzzle platformers so we weren't used to those kinds of puzzles. But if you replay it now it's pretty soft. The Witness is definitely in the hard category with hundreds of puzzles, many of which are grueling.

I think that's the main difference. Whether the player is expected to solve all the puzzles relatively smoothly, vs the expectation being you will get stuck at many points.

It is one of the most unique games I've ever played. But if you get it, just be aware that it is insanely hard. It will melt your brain. But if you stick with it, you will find it so rewarding. If you give in to looking up solutions, it will send you down a path where you will lose appreciation for the game. Because, if you look up one, what personal drive will stop you from looking up more. And when you look up more, you have removed the game from the game; there is no real story or dexterity required...it is 100% puzzle. You won't have the desire or patience to suffer while your brain explodes staring at the same level for 3 hours, so you'll just look them up in less and less time, and you won't get these euphoric rushes as the solution finally clicks after hours. You will take the easy way out. Only get Baba Is You if you have the fortitude to put your brain through hell. The level design for the game is some of the best I've seen for a puzzle game; nothing feels repetitious. The game is constantly adding new mechanics, and keeps using them in ways that feel fresh. And if you do plan to get it, don't look up anything in depth about it. One of the things that kept blowing me away was how deep down the rabbit hole you start going. I just kept wondering when or how or what the end of the game was going to be, and it kept doing things.

It's not a game for everyone as you can see from the feedback here. The game will lull you into this false sense of confidence with the tutorial levels where you get impressed with the novelty while solving stages in 5 minutes. Then it crushes you. If you do play it, make a topic here about your ongoing experience!

Thanks. I did end up picking this up and played a few puzzles. Not so hard so far, but I expect that to change. Making a topic is an idea, though a lot of times I play through games (especially puzzle games) in spurts, and might leave them alone for months at a time. It does sound pretty fun from your description.

Yeah, for puzzle games I'm really slow to look up solutions. I beat all the puzzles in Crashmo, Pushmo World, and Fire n Ice without looking any up. Maybe some others too. I've stared at puzzles in those games for long periods of time and came back to them later like you said. I'll admit I did look up maybe 3-4 times for Captain Toad (which I got 100% on not including the big mazes).

It's honestly a little ridiculous that such a silly premise managed to be as successful as it was, but Super Meat Boy would serve as a source of inspiration for an entire generation of indie platformers that would come after. It's kind of gross and super difficult, and every time you think you've hit the hardest challenges it has to offer, it brings you an alternate extra hard level to take on. There's so much content here, but one of the best aspects is the end of levels, where it replays all the death simultaneously (and there are inevitably going to be a lot of deaths). I think I actually had more patience for this level of difficulty in platforming around the time Meat Boy came out. Now I'm old and slow.

95. Bound
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE37l6

I was pretty disappointed this one flew as under the radar as it did, because it had all the makings to be one of the greats. Maybe the idea of "ballet-based platforming" doesn't appeal to everyone, but this game is gorgeous and a lot of fun to play. It can be a little awkward at times, as it does require you to keep in that ballet style consistently, but you'll eventually get used to it. It makes up for it by having plenty of options for speedrunners, encouraging you to find obscure and unintended pathways.

94. What the Golf?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSaEYgGEW6k

There was a brief period there in the late 2010s where I swear we were getting so many silly golf games, and What the Golf? is pretty easily the silliest. The game has some very liberal interpretations of what "golf" is. Sometimes, soccer is golf. Sometimes, bowling is golf. Sometimes, Portal is golf. It takes the simple mechanic of sending one thing toward another thing and constantly tries to one-up itself with its sense of humor.

It's certainly less ridiculous than Binding of Isaac.

Been replaying Super Meat Boy for probably my fifth time now and am currently beating the hell out of it worse than I ever have before. Game of the decade for me (and Binding of Isaac literally being #2).

That said, to your point, yes, it's weird that it got as big as it did. Why do I have a shirt with Meat Boy on it? Why did I buy the spin-off game with Dr. Fetus as its only character?

Because they're awesome, I suppose.

But still weird. "Kind of gross" is fair to say.

Super Meat Boy is the 2nd best platformer of the last 20 years, behind Celeste. Celeste is harder, so it's probably not long for this world in the ranking.

The amount of unlockable playable characters was a fun diversion from the platforming challenge, even though most of them weren't very good, since the game felt designed around Meat Boy himself.

Making a topic is an idea, though a lot of times I play through games (especially puzzle games) in spurts, and might leave them alone for months at a time.
Baba is such a fun game to watch and hear about other people's experiences. I got two people I personally know to play the game, and watching them stew over the puzzles and think out loud, and seeing how they work toward the solution is interesting.

Meat Boy is literally just Jumper (from Celeste creator) but with slightly grosser art. It was always gonna be a hit.

Isaac is genre-defining and very risky so that one is definitely surprising.

Wait where did you get the Baba shirt? I do still have my meat boy shirt but it's a much older and redder one, which came signed by Ed. The signature has long since faded though.

I started Baba Is You last night but got stuck after about two hours. One of the levels I couldn't figure out has almost nothing to work with so I'm obviously just missing something there. Gonna give it another shot today but yeah, the difficulty definitely ramped up fast.

I greatly dislike Super Meat Boy but I didn't play it until a couple of years ago and I feel like that was probably a big reason why.

Ah, different taste in platformers. Celeste was great! I had it as #17 on my Game of the Decade list, but I also had The End of Nigh at #14, Cuphead at #11, and Super Meat Boy as #1. Celeste was more consistent in quality than at least those first other two I named and was really successful in including narrative and boss fights to that type of game. Those later post-game stages are just too hard for me though with all the heightened challenges and mechanics coming in.

Oh well, I still like my Celeste Mountain hoody.

also I'm stupid lol, I wasn't stuck because I had already finished enough of the world to progress to the next world.

The worst mandatory Baba is You level is Crushers, I gave up and cheated for the first time on that one. It sucks because you can usually avoid a level here and there if it's causing you trouble but you need to beat that one to progress.

Great game tho.

This one is tough because you have to essentially figure out the rule theyre teaching you (which is mandatory to understand for later puzzles) without it being really suggested at all.

Originally it was even harder but they patched in this easier one and made the original an Extra.

93. Cult of the Lamb
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsPtUNB1z-Q

That thing I said about not being a big fan of roguelike dungeon crawlers? That still applies here! But fortunately that kinda feels like a secondary aspect of this game, with the big draw being taking the role of an immortal sheep antichrist trying to raise a cult of cutesy animals while trying to slaughter the old gods. It's like the very specific sense of dark humor that made all the Animal Crossing x Doom memes so popular. You gather followers, sometimes marry them, sometimes sacrifice them in your own name, it's a very good time.

92. Little Nightmares
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOadxZBsPiA

You've gotta love an accurate game title, because in Little Nightmares, you are very little and it is very much a nightmare. Seriously, this game manages to be creepy in every way imaginable. Creepy porcelain face lady, grotesque giant beings with body-horror distorted limbs. I'm a little iffy with survival horror games in general but I was really drawn in by just how creepy this is the whole way through.

91. Rocket League
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgSX3gOrj60

Cars playing soccer is the stupidest idea for a game and it is frankly insane that it works this well. And that was before this game started partnering with every brand imaginable. We live in a timeline where Rocket League x lofi hip hop beats to relax/study to is an actual thing that exists and that's truly a blessing.

90. OlliOlli World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OrHNwx6Yik

The OlliOlli games are basically the Runner games mixed with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Part of what I think makes these stand out a good bit above traditional endless runners is the added challenge of trying to do everything as a single combo. In a normal endless runner, a combo is built up by avoiding obstacles without crashing, but in OlliOlli World, you have to do the same thing, but with the extra goal of adding in tricks and connecting them through manuals. Add onto that the extra flavor of a skate crew (the best of which is Dad, who isn't anyone's dad, just a random wholesome middle-aged skateboarder amongst the teens and twenty-somethings) and skate gods.

89. Ghostrunner
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b70uw0XxeLg

Ghostrunner isn't as good as I hoped it would be, if only because I went into it with very high expectations. Ghostrunner doesn't always work out the way I hope it will, but when it does, maaaan does it feel good. Feeling fast and strong like an insane cybernetic ninja is a very fun experience, but trying to be a cybernetic ninja and then getting one-shot by some random goon as you flop around because something didn't work right isn't, like, the best. In hindsight, I think I ranked this one too high, but I did overall enjoy it a decent bit.

Bonus Ranking: Twelve Minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uob80LBVgzA

Played this one during the course of posting this ranking, so it gets ranked retrospectively. I really dug the first, like, half of Twelve Minutes. Time Loops aren't like new, and not even really new in games specifically, but I still dig time loop stories, and the most fun section of this game is in trying to figure out all the different things you can do in your small, enclosed space. The only problem with this is that ultimately there are a finite amount of things you can do, and around halfway through I started to hit a wall where I couldn't move the story forward anymore without doing a very specific thing, which led to a lot of repetitive trying the same thing but very slightly different until I figured out that one thing. And then the story goes from interesting to... weird. And not weird in a great way. But I still really dug the voice work and the time loop mechanics as a whole.

I'm already past where I would've ranked this so I'll drop it at uhhhh... just below Telling Lies feels right, so I'll call this 109
