Generalized disinterest in most movies to begin with.

As a medium, movies are pretty low in terms of media interest for me.

Now if I do want to see a movie, none of the options listed have prevented me from going to see a movie in theaters.

I actually like going to the theater. I enjoy movies, but i'm not really an avid movie watcher.

They closed down the only theater in town earlier this year, so even if I wanted to, I'd have to take a lyft/uber to another town to go.

It's mainly cost, not just of tickets but also mediocre snacks which have always been outlandishly expensive. I'll just watch it at home where my husband and I can be the audience you would otherwise loathe. Talking, making rude jokes, loudly eating snacks, pda, ect.

I don't mind going to the theater by myself, but it was nice whenever I went with someone else, and we talked about the movie afterwards.

now, I don't really have anyone to go with, and as a result, I don't think I care about movies as much in general, so going to the theater no longer has any appeal.

I think the local theater had a pass for unlimited movies for over $100.

But I have better uses for $100

There aren't really many movies I care enough about seeing to make the effort to go to a theater to see. If someone invites me to a movie, I might consider going, but with 3 kids it is difficult to find the time to get away from the family for that long.
The cost is also annoying to, especially since when my friends do see movies it is never "let's go to the cheaper matinee showing", it's "let's go to the fancy super expensive theater that is half an hour further away so we can piss away even more money on booze."

People and movie quality, probably?

I only really like going to the movies during dedicated film festivals, when I can be sure that 1) it's going to be an interesting movie, and 2) the rest of the audience is there to enjoy it without breaking the bare-minimum theater etiquette (no talking, no phones, no loud eating, no kicking front seats etc.).

I just don't see a point. Instead of going out, its way more convenient and way cheaper to just wait for it to come to streaming or pirate it and watch it at my own leisure, as comfortable as I want, without worrying about whether some jackass will be on their phone the whole time.

Nowadays if I ever to go the cinema its because someone invited me

Covid kinda of changed what movies I see worth going to the theater for. There arent many movies im going to have to see on release or in theaters. Last one was John Wick 4.

Other: why bother?

I'll go because someone wants to go with me, but it's not something I'd volunteer us to go to as my idea. I can watch whatever is on in theater at home whenever it makes home release. Whether it's on TV or streaming.

I'm not big on, "I gotta see it as soon as it releases!!!" Also while I'm not actively seeking spoilers, it's not the end of the world if the plot is spoiled for me.

Movies look at sound better on my home theater setup

The last movie I saw in theaters was Attack of the Clones over 20 years ago. That theater is closed now, and I don't know of any others within 30 miles even if I wanted to go. It's only a matter of time before they disappear like drive-ins and everything goes straight to streaming.

  • none in town, have to drive to the next city over to go to a theater
  • too lazy to go see in theaters when i can watch at home later on
  • not an avid viewer of new releases, like to let films run through the filter of reviews and especially word-of-mouth before piquing my interest

This is the main one. Like everything post pandemic, there seems to be a lot more asshats around ruining the experience, but mainly because a lot of the stuff coming out doesn't appeal to me.

I generally enjoy the moviegoing experience though.
