Unscientifically, like 80% of Japanese games complain about Christianity or the American military, and I don't see anyone crying about the destruction of video game escapism. Many Japanese games also love to simulate real cities in Japan

But don't let that stop people who cry about how their lives are miserable enough without Western video games refusing to let them escape reality for a few hours.

There is nothing 'political' about the existence of black people.

And wanting to 'escape' from a fictional world in which they are represented is very much not the neutral stance that TC is failing to portray it as.

I haven't played SM2 yet, but the first scene in the first game had Peter being sent his final eviction notice, then when he gets back from beating up Kingpin he sees that all his stuff is gone and he has to run around the city to get it back.

Yeah spider-man in general is just not really something id consider escapism. Sure hes got cool powers, but the series basically thrives off the fact that the dudes life is a mess, and you cant websling broken relationships back together

Honestly TC, if you want true escapism than you shouldn't play games that have plots deeper than "save the princess." Stories with any kind of or even a little bit of depth are always trying to say something.

Hate (I don't actually) to tell you this but most big and good games have politics in them. You probably just aren't aware enough to comprehend them.

I think BIPOC is meant to specifically highlight black and indigenous people because they have specific historic struggles tied to this countrys treatment of those groups that are different from people of color in general

it better to just stick with anime and things related to it (manga, light novels, bunch of modern fantasy inspired by anime) for pure escapism tbh. im not really into these anymore but they've helped me out during periods of high anxiety and hopelessness.

just replace the problematic racial slurs with "Black, Indigenous and/or Persons of Color" and you are good to go.

there's a difference between an organic classification (human), and a linguistically drifting arbitrary clustering of identities.

terminology is not just classification but also framing, and i consider the bipoc abstraction to be implicit erasure of identities and denuancing of the unique situations of identities, subsets, and intersections, as well as a soft form of othering.

i suppose an issue with it is that it's potentially an antithesis of intersectionality.

It's the unfortunate cycle of people wanting to do right by others, in this case the queer population, and so saying the things that seem to be the right things to say. But, fuckin', LGBTQ has queer infighting baked right in. "Lesbian" isn't arbitrarily the first word in that increasingly silly acronym, that was a fight between gay men and women back in the day. And adding more and more letters and symbols to it is just silly. Queer is so much better.
