It's not that sad to me. I doubt it was just because of money, because Disney had presumably been courting him for decades. I know that they basically allowed Return to Oz to be made as a favor to him, because it was directed by Lucas' friend (who Disney wanted to fire.)

I'm sure he would've sold it long before he did if it was just about money, I just don't think his heart was in it anymore and that he was finally ready to move on to other things.
