I blew through literally all of my ammo in the fight in top of the dam.

But we got there in the end

Maya is fun. I generally run a Hellbinder COM for standard play, swapping out to a Cat for boss fights. Those two COMs even have Legendary variants at higher levels.

As for the weapons, you probably figured it out already, but the sections before Sanctuary really limit what kinds of weapons can drop. Maya is usually comfortable with SMGs and/or Maliwan gear.

As for building Maya's skill tree, I usually start by going down the left tree far enough to get Converge(making her action skill act like a Singularity grenade) and then the right tree to the bottom for Ruin(slags affected enemies).

Cloud Kill usage is up to you. It used to be a pathetic joke for like 6.5 years after release. Then it was buffed to suit UVHM difficulty, so it overkills Normal and TVHM. Seems broken, but then you could consider how the DLC characters, Gaige and Krieg, were generally specced to tackle those higher difficulties.

Hyperion weapons can be interesting, but their performance varies wildly based on the weapon barrel. Until it was patched their pistols and smgs used to be hot garbage unless they had a matching Hyperion barrel to let them zero in within a few shots. They're also ammo hogs, just a few steps behind Vladof weapons. If you find yourself running out of ammo a lot then Jakobs or Maliwan can help you extend how many kills you get.

Ammo drops are weighted for those types where you're currently under 40% total capacity, which means they can be influenced by choosing when and how you pick up ammo. What you want to do to refill a particular ammo type after a fight is to avoid picking up anything from enemies, find multiple ammo chests and open them, also without picking up anything, then sweep back around and pick up everything. Otherwise once you hit that 40% capacity from picking up a few drops the ammo RNG spreads out and you'll find a bunch of ammo you can't use. By waiting and picking up everything in one sweep you keep the weighted drops and your ammo can bounce from 20-35% capacity after a big fight back to 75-90%.

The only Hyperion weapon I currently have is a corrosive sniper and it doesn't have major accuracy issues so far

Also have a Dahl ar with electrocute and a Torgue shotgun.

The shotgun is doing a lot of heavy lifting so far

Multibarrel Torgue shotguns can be great, so long as you aren't firing at a fast moving target.

Standard Dahl weapons(i.e. no 'red text') tend to be weak garbage with long reload times and small magazines. If you get all the right parts matched up they can be decent for a level or two, but it is generally safe to ignore the ones without special properties.
