Over 26,000 Ohio voters were purged from voter rolls last month due to inactivity by the Ohio Secretary of State.

NBC affiliate WCMHreports that while Secretary of State Frank LaRose hasn't announced the canceled voter registrations, the office's website has updated its database of of purged voters. To see if your voter registration has been canceled, click here.

Voters purged from the rolls can re-register to vote on the Secretary of State website. Those who were removed in September who did not register before Oct. 10 cannot vote in the Nov. 7 election.

As of Sept. 29, 26,666 voters were purged in the most recent cycle, according to the database. Of those voters, 3,018 were purged from the Hamilton County voter rolls.

WCMH says in March 2019, 34,692 voters who appeared in the National Change of Address database as having potentially moved were mailed notices that they had four years to take action before they would be removed from the rolls. In February of this year, LaRose directed county election boards to send additional notices to inactive voters with the warning that their registration could be canceled after the May primary.

Per LaRoses 2019 directive and under the NCOA process, voter registrations were to be canceled by late July. In June, LaRose instructed elections boards not to purge voters before the August special election but to expel voters from the rolls by Sept. 27.

For registration to be considered active, voters must have voted, confirmed or updated their registration, or engaged in voter activity in the past four years.

In an Oct. 20 letter to LaRose, Rep. Bride Rose Sweeney (D-Westlake) criticized the voter purge, especially as early voting had already begun for the November election with two statewide issues on the ballot.

You even stopped the purge before the August 2023 election, but now that our reproductive rights, our very lives, are on the November ballot, you have rushed to purge voters, Sweeney wrote. I urge you to do the right thing, be transparent, and undo any damage that may have been done.

LaRoses office did not respond to questions by the time of publication.

County boards of elections were ordered to cancel inactive voters' registration by Jan. 9 under the NCOA process and a supplemental process that began in 2018. In late February, LaRose announced that 124,158 voters were purged.

Ohio republicans just having a normal day preventing folks from voting. Vote on issue 1 btw if you live in Ohio and you're not arbitrarily prevented from voting

Hopefully, more Democratic voters were able to do their due diligence and vote early en masse unlike Republicans.

It's because America generally doesn't want certain people to be able to vote.

It should be illegal to purge voter rolls before an election and after the deadline to register has passed.

Anything they can do to keep the vote down will be done at this point.

Should be able to vote anyway with a provisional ballot. There's numbers you can call to assist you with voting problems like these run by private groups.

If they hadn't voted in 4 years were they suddenly going to vote in this election? Seems like they received plenty of notice and even allowed them to vote in the special election despite regulations allowing them to be expelled before then too. So how big of a deal can this really be?

Maybe? Sounds like turnout is pretty high there.

For constitutionally protected abortion rights and legal recreational marijuana, some infrequent voters probably would have liked to have been able to vote this year, one way or the other.

In any case, it's not like keeping them on the voter rolls was dragging the state down in any way.

Isn't there something important happening each election? If there was nothing pressing enough occurring in the previous 4 years of elections then why would this be the one to sway them? It's not like the state didn't make the attempt to reach out and notify them before they were purged.

America is extremely allergic to democracy

Everyone should be registered to vote merely by existing over the age of 18. Everyone should be mailed a ballot and in-person voting should last a week, with one day set as a holiday.

I haven't voted since 2020 but when I renewed that they asked me last month if I wanted to renew my voting registration so I said yes.

I never said they have an expiration date, I'm just skeptical about how big a deal this is in the long run. Four years a long time and there have been several important elections in that time. There have been votes regarding senators, congressmen, and even a whole entire presidential administration have been elected in the time those people didn't vote. If none of the issues on those ballots were enough to get those people to show up to vote then why would weed and abortion?

I agree with the sentiment brought up in post 23, that just leaving them on the rolls won't hurt anything in the long run. On the other hand, how would removing them hurt anything either?

If you can get issued a social security card just for existing, you can get a voter registration just for existing.
