You catch your teenage son stealing food from your local Target and giving to a group of desperate homeless people living under a bridge. You know he's been up to something for a while and this is not the first time.

When you catch him, he claims the food was expired and was going to be thrown out anyway despite still being edible. He's not hurting anyone, society is just wrong.

Target knows food is being stolen but they haven't pegged your son yet.

I wouldn't punish him or anything, but would advise him what he's doing isn't smart since they'll go after him eventually. Even if he is right. I'd encourage him to help the homeless in a manner that's legal. Probably even give him some help with that if I have the money to spare then.

That's gonna be a "I won't intervene or nark, but I'm not gonna bail you out if you get caught either" situation.

I make him steal stuff from the homeless and give it to Target. Fair is fair.

Tell him to avoid Target because they are usually heavily surveilled and I believe Target works closely with the police.

And instead of stealing, go dumpster diving late at night at grocery stores or dollar stores. You'll get decent food that are perfectly in good condition.

Also, tell your kid to stop being a lazy poser and actually volunteer instead of stealing and handing out expired food.

Ill tell him to stop and wont punish him, but only the first time.

Tell him that his Robin Hood antics don't really amount to much on such a small scale as shoplifting, and the only thing they'd really accomplish is netting him a rap sheet. If he really wants to help the poor and fuck over the rich, he needs to completely dismantle our current hypercapitalist institutions first.

He should have just asked the multi billion dollar corporation to donate the mountains of food they throw in the dumpsters to give to the starving homeless Americans instead. I'm sure they would have obliged.

I'd encourage him to do some research and find a way to work with the store on receiving and transporting the expired food. I believe some stores already do donate food to shelters so I'd just encourage him to find a legal and more efficient way to do what he's already doing.

Get him to channel that energy into something like a food bank or soup kitchen and join him in the effort as a positive bonding experience.

Punish him most severely. Stealing? Good. Charity? Bad. I raised him better than that.
