I just got the game and have had next to no spoilers on either the story or game progression. I crunched a ton on the first day, completing a ton of little quests and leveling up twice. I'm confident I left no stone unturned, but I must have had a sub-optimal route because it's end of day and I can't sleep anywhere except a dumpster that kills me?

I needed to pay like a billion dollars to the starting cafe guy for damages and rent. I talked him down to 30 bucks for the room, thinking that this was easily attainable. Even after finding the yellow bag at 15:00 and blitzing the tare machine I made like... seven dollars. Looting a ton of boxes got me up to 10 more, then I spent 6 on a few items. Now the day is over, I can't pay my tab, can't sleep in my hotel room (locked, need to pay) and can only sleep in the dumpster via my hobocop thought and it just kills me flat out. Even if I didn't buy the items I made it to 17 dollars, not 30. I was looting like 0.15 dollars and shit from most boxes.

The game is engaging, and hilarious, and I enjoyed like five slapstick death rolls up to that point and just humored it with reloading my quicksave and pressing on. But now I can't. I played the game wrong, can't continue to Day 2, and just tossed 4 hours out the window and I'm pissed.

it's been a while since I've played, but have you tried talking to either the owner of the hotel or Kim about it?

Kim is supposed to bring it up and try to help come up with a solution. There are other ways but they require passing some pretty difficult checks.
