Kmart, but in the mid 2000s a Walmart opened up that was closer then.

The Kmart hung on for quite a long time. It closed sometime in the 2010s, I believe. It was a shadow of its former self for years, though.

The town actually used the old Kmart building to give out covid shots back when they were just first widely available. Kmart had been closed for a while by then.

Kmart. Didn't get a Walmart near me until mid 00's.

I still remember how Kmart smelled - that stale yet oddly pleasant sterilized odor. Target smells like stuffy yarn. Walmart smells like Kmart + old newpapers.

Kmart technically. I picked up Mario 3 at the Kmart when I was in middle school. They were around first, Target came later and was accessed by a common parking lot. We didnt get Walmarts until after I had moved on to college. More of a Meijer town.

K-Mart and later Target were across the street from each other less than 5 minutes away from where I lived if you drove.

Wal-Mart was 10-15 minute depending on traffic and lights

There was never a Kmart real close. The nearest one was like 40 minutes away. A couple Walmarts popped up nearby in the early 90s. I don't remember any Targets around here until the late 2000s.

Our local department store before Walmart destroyed it was called Ames.

Kmart was slightly closer (just under 6 miles) than Walmart (just over 6 miles) from my parents house. Kmart was a few miles closer from my grandparents house. There was a mountain between us and the nearest Target, probably 40 minutes.

It was Target actually. I could walk there. But I remember a Hills not being too far either hah but definitely a longer walk conpared to Target. I am not positive when the Target was built by me but it was definitely later 90s and was closer than Kmart or Walmart.

I lived in the middle of nowhere, so despite it being closest, Walmart was still a half hour drive away.

Actually K-Mart might have been closer. The two were very near each other and I don't remember which one we technically would see first.

Before that Target it was probably K-mart. But c'mon like I am going to calculate this all precisely but K-Mart while staying open here for a while still was going kaput by the time Target was making a name for itself.

Not sure about the 90s because I wasn't driving yet (and over 20 years ago). Also different in the early and late 90s since that was three different places.
2000s and on has been walmart.

Of those we've only had Kmart here, and apparently it's not the same chain as the American one.

Though I have been to a Target before many years ago in Australia. I remember buying some cool Simpsons trading cards.

Not that I remember much from where I was born since I moved at a pretty young age, but pretty sure it was K-Mart. In my hometown where I grew up it was definitely Target. We had a Wal-Mart but it was away from town IIRC and there was a lot of active effort into keeping them from building a Super Wal-Mart.

Walmart

The closest Kmart was 11 miles away
The closest Target was 6 miles away
The closest Walmart was 3 miles away

There was also a Venture store that was across the street from the Walmart and was my family's primary retail store until Wally ran them out of business.

I lived in several places in those 20 years. I actually worked in a Target for 3 of them. I avoided Walmart like the plague it is, but it was never closest anyway. I think Kmart was always the most conveniently located.

In one town I lived in we had a Pamida which was basically the same thing. It was closer then the Walmart which was just a bit further down the main street, but I would've walked an extra mile if need be just to avoid Walmart.
