Today we get pounded with ads everywhere. Go back in time and you would have to read a newspaper or turn on a radio to see an ad and they were less intrusive. Beyond that it was even less and further beyond and ads basically nonexistent. Infact most of human history advertisement was not a word an only word of mouth mattered. But you are probably seeing or blocking an ad as we speak because your pocket device is designed to spy on you and vomit ads at you. What are we doing as mankind? In the form of the internet, sure, but signs have existed for thousands of years. Any major trading venue or ports would have had ads covering the major roads.
