Remove the cap on taxable income for social security. Tax things like stock options, capitol gains etc too.

Boom the bulk of the funding issue is solved.

Or, better idea, get rid of it. Especially given how much easier things were in their time financially, there is zero reason our generation - already facing the burden of the mess that generation has created - should have to fund their choice to stop working without sufficient savings to fall back on.

Even if social security and Medicare programs were dissolved, I highly doubt t they'd stop taking that money that's usually allocated for it. I'm sure the government would just create some new unrelated program to use that tax money for, and probably increase the amount taxed.

No.

Let's not go back to the time when seniors were dying of starvation and being tossed out of their homes before social security. Granted, there are better systems to explore, but you haven't suggested a replacement.

Exactly, Social Security is supposed to work on the principle that such a large pool paying in buffers the risk like how insurance essentially works.

Let people privatize their retirement and:

1) You remove people from the pool and lessen the efficacy.
2) We're going to have to pay for those people if the private market investments go belly up anyway. I am not going to advocate seniors starve because the bad financial advice they took failed them, I'm not a monster.

...so what happens when we retire?

or I guess not retire, but reduce our hours after retirement age

medicare/medicaid will get cut first anyway. it costs a ridiculous amount of money to keep elderly people alive.

Yeah, and the problem with these folks that want to privatize Soc Security, is that they would be the first to tell others who struggle or risk losing their homes to shut up and pull yourselves up by the bootstraps or whatever... but I guarantee they will be looking for that government assistance they scold others for accepting if their private retirement goes under due to another big recession or massive fraud.

Thankfully most of them that invested in crypto, as an example of this, were working age and may be able to recover, but outside of the grifters running the crypto scams, I didn't actually want those regular crypto broz to lose everything and struggle financially. I feel sorry for them and a little sad that most wont learn the lesson from stupid commie leftists like me who warned them it wasn't a sound investment.

It is because it has been borrowed from.
And also, I was meant for people who were actually needy, like widowed wives when it was perceived.
Not for some old yuppies as a reward for getting old.
Or the people who should be out of the workforce living their best lives with their pensions, who work 'just enough' to still get SS.
Thus hurting the workforce for younger people who are trying to get their lives started.

~That's why.

No, it was literally meant to protect the elderly because people starving and losing their homes as they aged was fairly common. Not everyone had children, or even children that could support them into old age. This was the era of the New Deal, and it brought about the greatest middle class expansion in the entire history of the world.

Where are you getting this idea social security was just for the odd old widow?

That was my point, that's why I stated Widowed Woman as an example.
For it's intended us it was a really good plan.
Also, not to be used as a slush fund for president's pet project, to the tune of Trillions of dollars.

An act to provide for the general welfare by establishing a system of Federal old-age benefits, and by enabling the several States to make more adequate provision for aged persons, blind persons, dependent and crippled children, maternal and child welfare, public health, and the administration of their unemployment

The Government Has Borrowed $1.7 Trillion From The Social Security Trust Fund. The government has borrowed the total value of the Trust Fund to pay for other government spending. Beginning in 2017, the government will have to begin backing up these paper promises with real money.

My suggested replacement is they either live off their own savings / investments, or get a job, just like the rest of us have to do. Our generation are struggling enough to support ourselves, mostly due to the actions of the generations who are retiring, so there is zero reason we should be supporting lazy old boomers who just want to mooch off us too.

Those who are on it due to, say, disability, or even inability to find work, is a different matter. But those who've simply decided they don't want to work anymore, nah, screw them.

No. This is a nightmare scenario that would be worse than just getting rid of it. You couldn't even call it a pretense at social security anymore if you just let people start opting out for privatizing.
