While I'm not exactly keen on Keffals due to their divisive personality, I can honestly say that I don't agree with the views of tankies who think Ukraine should surrender to Russia.

Tankies are leftists that support military action by leftist or "leftist" (by which they mean non-American) countries.

Most people on the left don't like tankies because most in the left are not pro militarism.

This. Like, tankies are just a waste of space. They don't vote, they don't really organize, aren't politically active in any other ways. All they do is suck energy from the left movement and add in constant online negativity. They aren't serious people.

I do think it is wrong to call them fascists though. They are essentially left wing reactionaries. Their views are a knee-jerk contrarian reaction to bad things in the world. Its always stuff like, "The United States is bad so North Korea must be a worker's paradise". Its very dumb shit.

I mean, the other side of that though is that they aren't very dangerous. A fascist is dangerous specifically because they can take political power. Tankies are never going to take political power anywhere unless the Soviet Union magically reappears, takes over the world and appoints them all to positions of power (I mean, that's essentially what happened in Romania, where 600 something Stalinists were just outright appointed into positions of power from having zero political influence).

Not all communists are tankies. Like, modern day communists in Portugal managed a successful coalition government with social democrats.

Whether all or even most tankies really even are communists is questionable. Tankies are essentially the kind of "communists" who nowadays just support every kind of atrocity by nations like the Soviet Union, modern day China (Which is an authoritarian capitalist state, not really a communist one except in name), and even modern day Russia (Which is about as far from communism as it gets. It is literally just a fascist state.). Like, it isn't an ideologically consistent thing.

I always thought it had to do with Tiananmen.

It has to do with the uprisings in Hungary and Czechoslovakia in the 1950s and 60s that the USSR put down by rolling tanks into Budapest and Prague. British communists who supported those actions were called tankies.

I don't hate Biden. I'm not terribly pleased with him over this Israel crap, but he still had a lot of good will for getting us out of Afghanistan and at least attempting to do good things.

That's where it gets the name from but it basically means someone who excuses / apologizes for atrocities committed by Communist governments.

Like, what tankies actually believe isn't easy to make sense of precisely because a lot of them are dumb and don't have consistent ideas or any real knowledge of the states they support.

Tankies are not worthwhile or worthy allies. They are an extreme subset of an already small subset that typically courts deep levels of social conservatism.

When the purity test leftists meet the armed resistance, water the soil of the tree of liberty with blood leftists, except the latter is oddly really confused for some reason.

I think most people end up tankies because they went too deep down the US cold war rabbithole. You end up spending so much time studying the legitimately fucked up shit that the US has gotten up to and then lied about over the years that you find yourself thinking "well if the US is on this side then it must be the wrong side". So you end up thinking that China and NK are really worker's paradises and that the Ukrainians really are all secret Nazis and the Russians are good guys.

To avoid becoming a tankie you just have to acknowledge that occasionally the West/NATO does end up on the right side every great once in awhile.

To relate to your later comments about ideology, the only consistent ideology tankies have is being on the opposite side of any argument America or Wester Europe makes.

One of the hallmarks of being a leftist is caring passionately for human rights and liberties. Tankies violate that by selectively applying it to certain groups of people while conveniently ignoring others.

Just because people are left that doesnt mean they necessarily agree on many things. The second most leftist party in my country worked together most with one of the most far right parties in Europe since they have more in common on certain points than they do with other parties in their general sphere.

You know how some people mock leftists for saying "America bad," when really they're saying, "Hey, there's no reason we can't have SOME system better than we currently do"?

Tankies are people who really do believe "America bad." Then they turn around and say "China and Russia good." They support what they think are communist utopias without actually examining what communism is or what Russia and China are.
