Barbie was tracking extremely well before it opened.

This is tracking for a $300-$350 WW. That's not a flop, but a bomb.

It's an MCU film, which are pretty inoffensive in general. Unless the area was filled with Brie Larson hating white supremacists who only watch movies without bipoc leads, there really isn't reason to expect them to be averse to a MCU film for any reason other than state of the franchise.

Conservatives on Twitter do not equate the general movie going audience. A few haters fight stop Captain Marvel from being a huge success. The MCU growing stale and making bad movies on the other hand is far more dangerous for financial success.

I never read her comics, so the one thing I know of Captain Marvel in comics is that she said Magneto is a guy who goes online and compares everything to the Holocaust.

So, in a very rare instance, no personality is more likable than the alternative I know. /Magnetowasright

What is up with Disney releasing back to back mediocre movies? Granted, Guardians 3 was fantastic but this streak of bad movies is what's doing Disney more harm financially.

I honestly think Disney got too cozy with Infinity War hype and just thought MCU= printing money. There were a number of stinkers before Endgame, but no one really wants to ask why those made money and now suddenly other mid-to-bad movies arent making money.
Also, Chapek wanted more releases, so quality control was probably lowered.

Something has definitely changed. Was it Covid? Over reliance on D+? Stretching Kevin Feige too thin? Majors drama? Did the monkey's paw run out of fingers? Everything seems to be going wrong at once.

How will they blame fans for this one? I assume the usual cries of sexism and whatnot.

Bottom line for me personally is that, while I'm interested in this movie, I'm also an introverted germaphobe living in a post-Covid world, and it takes a major must-see movie event to get my butt in a seat when I could otherwise just wait a couple months and catch it on D+. Not even GotG 3 had that kind of pull.

This isnt a politically jarring movie just because it has three women, two of whom a bipoc as leads. Audiences can probably an expect an inoffensive film where some bad guys eventually get beat up between some quips. Legit, one would have to be overtly racist or misogynist on a very deep level to take issue with the movie in regards to anything viewed as conservative.

Unless you mean conservative with money, because it sounds like this movie was expensive and wont make that money back. So if one owns stock in Disney, yeah, I guess then theyd be mad.

Barbie probably ruffled more conservative feathers, and that was a major success.

Considering Captain Marvel was a billion dollar movie and Ms Marvel was one of the more popular comic book heroes without a movie if this does flop it's pretty undeniable that Marvel Studios fucked up here right? At least it's the most direct example.

Not necessarily considering the stars can't really promote this. And Iman Vellani's personality would probably go a long way to selling audiences on seeing it. There's also a few other considerations like the fact people simply aren't going to the movies the same way they did pre-pandemic. Sales are down all around.

Even my girlfriend thought this movie looked dumb and stupid and she has pretty low standards with entertainment.

Disney was the company who released the outliers only a few years ago.

Stuff like them focusing on Disney+ is also a major reason why the landscape is different.

Yup. I understand they needed content but they planned it all wrong.

The first Captain marvel only did great because it was sandwiched between two of the biggest marvel movies of all time and fans thought they had to watch it to understand endgame.

Marvel movies are failing because Disney no longer cares about quality writing. They'll hire absolutely anybody. They don't have to be fans of the comics. Many don't even seem to be fans of the marvel movies themselves because with how often they break the continuity of their own universe and even going as far as breaking the continuity of their own individual shows .

Got the writers of She-Hulk over here who are about as unrelatable as you can get to your average woman. Your average woman isn't living the Hollywood mom life where her worst thing that happens to her is she gets cat called and apparently holding one of the best jobs in life still isn't fulfilling enough. Admitting they don't even know how to make a courtroom drama.

Show after show has the old hero being replaced by younger female who is almost always an explicitly a genius, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Ironman, Indiana Jones. This can work sometimes but this is over doing it. Not to mention heroes are a lot more interesting when they have original origin stories not just passing of the mantle. The general audience doesn't want to see this, they want to see they heroes marvel built up to be one of the biggest franchises in history.

Marvel movies were always going to fall at one point but boy did they make it crash and burn a lot quicker than it needed to be. Another thing they could have been doing is keeping good villains around for a while instead of making them conveyor belt villains. Loki used to be badass but he was made into a joke.

Someone linked to this article about Texas being conservative, and this line had me say "that's fucking disgusting" three times out loud, in a row, each time louder than the last. Every trustee that supported removing those from the nondescription policy should be ousted and banned from ever being a trustee again.

And still, the district has continued to stoke controversy. In December 2022, the majority conservative board of trustees struck references to gender identity, sexual orientation and religion from its nondiscrimination statement in its student code of conduct

I don't understand why the DC universe failed... it was helmed by a deeply misogynist pro authoritarian director and was centered around highly traditionally masculine heroes who didn't quibble over the morality of killing villains and causing mass casualties.

The only well received movie was directed by a woman about a woman hero and featured an entertaining light romance plot...

Marvel needs to step up their game. They have been coasting off the success of earlier films and have gotten lazy. Hopefully they are learning from this.

From what I have seen there is no pandering in this film. Female heroes existing isn't pandering.

I agree that if it's bad it's bad.

A comic character is only as good or bad as the people writing it. There have been some really really bad Carol Captain Marvel comics, but there have also been some that are quite good. I dislike the idea of always hating a character no matter what. All fictional characters can be salvaged.
