Pfizer said it recorded a $5.6 billion charge for inventory write-offs in the third quarter due to lower-than-expected use of Covid products. Of these previously announced write-offs, $4.7 billion is chalked up to Paxlovid and $900 million is attributed to the company's vaccine.

Looks like they lost money taking the drug to private commercial sales, banking on charging more for people willing going to buy it as individuals through insurance, instead of a slightly smaller profit selling it to the government where more people will take the annual vaccine for free because the govt is distributing it.

Almost like socializing the vaccine actually generated more revenue than selling it commercially at a higher sticker price.

Go figure.

How did you come to this conclusion? Because paxlovid came off of government subsidies literally yesterday (i.e., after last quarter).

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

A downplay of real losses if anything, as they wouldnt want to publicize any more losses than they absolutely have to for their quarterly reports (as itll drive down their share price).

Not really a loss when the government is for sure going to come in and take care of it...
