I guess you have Red Dead, but that's a movie game so it doesn't count.

I'm more thinking games with super deep dueling and bounty/infamy systems.

Have some cool gun/katana customization, throw in a dumb plot with some fun bosses and I think itd be a great game.

Rise of the Ronin (upcoming Team Ninja game for the PS5) looks good, IMO:

there's also Like a Dragon: Ishin (Yakuza series spin-off, set in feudal Japan) that came out earlier this year, I think.

Looks cool but it looks more like its just an aesthetic for a fairly standard 3d action/adventure game.

I'm more thinking of a game super into the setting

Define "movie game."

Because as others have said, you have not played either Red Dead Redemption game.

There was a great samurai/fighter hybrid for the PS2 that was essentially just going to various different dojos and defeating the masters. Then you'd unlock their moves and you could design your own move set, combos and stuff. Low budget game but I liked it a lot.

I want a game where its samurai that also have revolvers, that would be cool.

Yeah, samurai games come out every year. I'd be up for more, though.

And the thing about Wild West games is that guns just kind of sucked up until the 1940s or so. There's really only so much you can do with, say, 1880s gun tech without running into either a brick wall or just saying fuck it and giving you a completely out of place weapon instead.

I don't know, there's still pretty good variety in guns for westerns. Revolvers, semi-auto handguns if you move closer to the 1900s, slower bolt action rifles, quicker lever actions, different shotguns, and then there's weird guns weapon makers were trying out in the 1800s that didn't make the cut you could throw in for some wackier stuff.

I'm not saying that there wasn't variety, but compared to modern or futuristic shooters? Okay, you have a six shooter or an eight shooter revolver and maybe a pump action shotgun and a repeater carbine that has a dozen and a half rounds but is then a pain in the ass to reload. That's a pretty limited assortment of carryable weapons compared to WWII and later games, which can feature pistols with much larger magazines, submachine guns, heavy and light machine guns, bazookas and rocket launchers, sniper rifles, assorted throwable and attachable explosives, and that's not even bringing up future tech, just to name a few.

There's just less gunplay options the further back in time you make your game's setting.

Outside of machine guns a Western game has all those, though. "Bazookas" tend to be stationary cannons, but still.

Bazookas were fully portable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bazooka

And the better pistols and rifles and a huge assortment of machinegun options alone are huge differences in variety, and more grenade options and ammo options make a big difference, too, and that's only scratching the surface.

There will always be a market for cowboy games, Red Dead being proof of that, but they'll never be the norm and will quickly reach a critical mass if too many are released in a short period for those reasons alone.
