It was something new and it had Shinji Mikami. That's more than most games can say.

But I also watched some gameplay - the beginning and a part from later on - and it looked like a bunch of summoning other characters to attack for you.
And is the rhythm thing actually fun? Seems kind of constraining if you have only attack within the windows where the game wants you to.

its basically an arcadey, rhythm/beat em up, platformer type game

You go thru stages trying to complete objectives while fighting off enemies. You also have assist characters as you progress through the game to help in exploration/platforming and combat.

The timing for the rhythm can take a little bit to get used to, but there are ways the game helps you to attack or move to the beat Via a metronome, character animations, and stage animations, they all move to the beat.

Rhythm affects all aspects of the game and while you can play off rhythm, you are rewarded more with either more damage or better timing, (i actually forgot but things are better on rhythm than not)

To add to Renegade, the overall presentation is absolutely superb with all sorts of oddball items marching along in beat. The music is an excellent fit and the gameplay is easy to get into, but rewards execution in spades. It's fuckin fantastic.

I just don't wanna game where I'm too heavily discouraged from messing around and trying dumb things.
Like what if my attack's on rhythm, but it misses? Do I get fast recovery, punished heavily for missing or something in between?

I should probably also be asking how challenging it is.

I hate when these kinds of games are all flash and are just trying to trick you into thinking you're doing great because you can use lots of flashy moves against punching bags.
I typed in Hi Fi Rush combo mad and I'm seeing some stuff that looks like that.

Well yeah, but I mean more is it actually challenging on the higher difficulties, in what ways is it challenging. Stuff like that. I'd be disappointed it most the challenge came down to luck and tedium.

I always feel like with games like this, the highest difficulty is the real game. Everything beneath is just powering your character, learning the basics and messing around.

it's challenging in that harder difficulties make the rhythm timing super tight. Where easy is the most lenient and very hard is the least lenient, requiring almost precise on beat timing for very hard. Other than that what changes is the enemy health going from low to high as well the stun meter doing the same (which doing enough stun provides openings to do damage). You also take more damage the higher the difficulty.

The usual stuff in terms of action based games.

I watched a bit more.
It's decently funny. The visual stuff is hitting more than the quips.

But I also saw this fight against the Scottish character and I swear it was just 6 minutes of walking in a circle and copying the inputs in-between stretches of dialogue like some kind of Mario Party minigame. What was that about?

It is like follow the rules type of mashing but it is not super strict about it. Can go offbeat and stuff

I enjoyed what I played. My only gripe was the constant cutscenes throughout the levels. Id prefer each level to only have a short cutscene in the beginning and at the end.. not like a few in the middle. That just annoys me too much. Infact I dropped the game because of it lol but ik it not a big deal for many people.
